I'm so sorry to hear you're going through this. It know it's got to be awful to wait out a biopsy result. Information from the disability company is not helpful. I was notified by my oncologist who follows up with me for my past diagnosis of medullary thyroid cancer that their appeared from my recent pet scan to be a recurrence of the tumor and that I would have to undergo chemo and radiation if the needle biopsy he did this morning came back positive.

I can handle having to have more treatment for the cancer, but he says that I will be unable to work in a clinical setting if I do need the chemo and radiation and that I need to start looking for alternative job opportunities before I need them. He said that he imagined that I would have to be out of the office a minimum of 8-10 months and suggested that I explore alternative job opportunities for physicians that did not require direct interaction with patients due to the impact the cancer treatment would have on my immune system. I donâ€™t have a clue where to start looking or even who I might contact for possible job opportunities.

If you were my pt, I would think the next few mos will be very difficult both physically and emotionally. I would encourage you to take some time off and put you on disability. I would say you are not fit to do any work. You needs the time to heal. If your doctor won't do this, find a doctor w more compassion who will. Maybe we could do an eVisit, I would write a letter on your behalf. But I am out of state, that might not looko so good. My prayers are with you. Let me know if I can help in anyway.

If it insures you for disability that would prevent you practicing "your specialty", and your specialty involves direct patient care, being forbidden to have patient contact will not allow you to work in your specialty and should thus allow you to collect disability. The simple advice to take it one day at a time is easier to say than to do, but can allow you to deal with seemingly insurmountable odds in small bites, easier to manage. I have been in situation similar to yours twice, and can say that the second time I faced such an unknown future, was I able to place my trust in the wisdom of the Creator to know what was best for me and my future.

In a practical sense, one can hope and plan for the best while being ready for the worst if it comes your way sooner than extected. Our prayers are with you.

It's possible though Beth, you don't want anytime off. I had a pt who was a psychiatrist who kept working during his chemo. He said it helped keep his mind off his illness and he felt more normal. He could do it more easily because his pt were not contagious. It all depends on what you want and what you think is best for yourself at this time. A good doctor needs to support you and your decision.

I contacted my disability insurance and they claimed that if the doctor says I can work , just not in a direct patient setting that I would not be eligible to collect my disability insurance anyway and that since the policy was only taken out 3 years ago and my initial treatment was over 15 years ago, that the insurer would most likely consider this to be a recurrence of a preexisting condition and no benefits would be payable anyways. It's possible though Beth, you don't want anytime off. I had a pt who was a psychiatrist who kept working during his chemo. He said it helped keep his mind off his illness and he felt more normal. He could do it more easily because his pt were not contagious. It all depends on what you want and what you think is best for yourself at this time. A good doctor needs to support you and your decision.

I was notified by my oncologist who follows up with me for my past diagnosis of medullary thyroid cancer that their appeared from my recent pet scan to be a recurrence of the tumor and that I would have to undergo chemo and radiation if the needle biopsy he did this morning came back positive.

I can handle having to have more treatment for the cancer, but he says that I will be unable to work in a clinical setting if I do need the chemo and radiation and that I need to start looking for alternative job opportunities before I need them. Yeah, is it your Oncologist who is not willing to take you out for some insane mistaken thinking? Perhaps you could approach your own Primary (hopefully there is someone near by that you trust half as much as you trust yourself and the others here... and give them a visit or two from time to time to "justify" keeping you out for awhile including keeping you and your weakened immune system away from almost anyone and everyone not wearing a mask and coughing and sneezing the freakin' flu all over town these days..... Again you are not your cancer, you are a whole person and the whole patient and their circumstances need to be taken into account. The same kind of common sense basic care you provide for all of your patients each and every day.... What a bum rap... Hang in there and take good care of yourself every chance you get....

I would say you are not fit to do any work. You needs the time to heal. If your doctor won't do this, find a doctor w more compassion who will. Yeah, is it your Oncologist who is not willing to take you out for some insane mistaken thinking?
