Guest guest
Sharon, I am majoring in Sociology and English at Texas Woman’s University. I am a Teaching Assistant currently and want to get my degree. I may seek alternate certification to teach or do something else. Not sure yet. It is really tough, working and going to school but I know it will be worth it. Really hard after 40 but it makes my brain work. I like to read Sue Grafton too. Love mysteries. Have you ever read Dianne Mott son? She writes mysteries about a caterer. Lots of fun recipes. You are right about Cornwell. The serial murder stuff started getting weird. I read “One Particular Harbor”. I admired the author but did not like the book. I think it scared me more then a scary mystery…. Would rather dwell on good days---not think of what may come. Hobbies... well, let's see. Right now I'm " stuck " on paper mache. (excuse the pun). It started as a project with my grandkids -- I make a flour paste and we glue strips/pieces of newspaper on. Layer after layer. It's very calming! lol ON to what you may ask? I have saved all kinds of empty containers--oatmeal, grits, toilet paper rolls... stuff like that. We've had fun with it. After we are done my 9 y/o granddaughter with Aspergers Syndrome takes the leftover flour glue outside in the backyard and she glues sticks/cardboard/trash together. She loves it and has spent hours doing it. I guess we are both *stuck* on paper mache! Other hobbies? I like to paint and I am working on several secret projects right now. I also do oil painting but haven't done any new paintings in years. I'm hoping to get the inspiration to paint again. I read. I like mysteries like Sue Grafton books. I used to really like Cornwell but she's gotten weird. Right now I'm reading " One Particular Harbor " by Janet Lee . It's the story of her life with MS in the Alaska wilderness. Very good book but it's also made me have second thoughts about a lot of my recent life choices. Crossword puzzles and such are really good for our MS minds. Guest guest
Connie: I also went back to school after 40. What a challenge, especially with MS. What do you think your biggest hurdle for school success is--being over 40 or doing it with MS? I'll have to look for the son books. I appreciate the tip. The last Cornwell book I read was not cohesive, as far as I was concerned. Too scattered. "One Particular Harbor" is scaring me too. I loved the descriptives when she is seeing Alaska for the first time, going dog sledding... but now I'm further into the book and it's frightening. Does the book tell where this author is now? I do wonder what has happened to her. Maybe she would have done better if she had taken care of herself and not lived the excessive life she did throughout the book? Guest guest
Hi : I haven't done a pinata but some of my grandkids have. I'll have to try it sometime soon. How long does it take to dry? What I have done is blow up a balloon, cover it with paper mache, pop the balloon then turned it into a hot air balloon for a baby shower. You can also do it with crochet thread, dipping it in stiffening medium and wrapping it round and round and round. Dip it again in stiffening and hang to dry. Then turn it into a hot air balloon with ribbons hanging down to connect to a basket. It's fun but time consuming. Sharonjerry plows wrote: Sharon Have you ever attempted a pinata out of paper mache? Guest guest
Hi Dawn, Great to find another teachers assistant on this site. J I taught pre-K for a number of years then when we moved here I started working for the school district. I am a Resource Aide. I work with learning disabled children grades 1-4 that are at least one year behind grade level. Lots of one-on-one and small groups. Love my kids!!! I am 44 and have thought about going back for a long time. I have 3 sons going to college and a daughter in high school. I want to graduate before she goes away so I can help pay for her tuition. I only have 39 credits left after this semester. A lot of my course work is done at home online. It is hard but I think it will be worth it. I would love to teach at the school I am currently at. The staff is great. Our principal last year had a rough year with her MS and resigned. The staff was so supportive of her—and me. Sometimes they switch duties with me when I am tired. We all walked the MS Walk together. It’s great to work somewhere that people care. Thanks for hug…. I always wanted to go back to school to finish, probably have 2 years left but, things always got in the way, ie. now Rick with MS and the fact I'm 45 it's just not a priority anymore. I've been doing it for, gulp, 13 years. I'm at a 6-8th grade middle school (5 yrs.) but, I'm really considering going back to the little kids next year. The staff is really great and compassionate when I e-mailed them about Rick and his dxed. But when I heard your a TA too. I just had to share. Have a great day and I hope finals are going well for you too. ~hugs~ Dawn connie buran wrote: Sharon, I am majoring in Sociology and English at Texas Woman’s University. Guest guest
I'll have to try that for the baby's room. She has blue clouds on her wall and I think that would look cute hanging there. To dry the pinata fully takes about 24-36 hours in dry conditions, 48 hours if the environment is humid or damp. You know its dry if you knock on it and it sounds hollow, almost like checking to see if a loaf of bread is done yet LOL. Then turn it into a hot air balloon with ribbons hanging down to connect to a basket. It's fun but time consuming. Sharonjerry plows wrote: Sharon Have you ever attempted a pinata out of paper mache? I blow a balloon up and then layer newspaper strips on it leaving a small area bare, I let it dry and then pop the balloon, you can take the balloon piece out after you pop it. We just fill it with candy and then bombs away, the kids are at it like crazed lunatics. Its alot cheaper than buying one of the premade pinatas. Just wanted to add my two cents LOL Sharon Marsden wrote: Hi Connie: You said you are in the midst of finals--for what? Hobbies... well, let's see. Right now I'm "stuck" on paper mache. Right now I'm reading "One Particular Harbor" by Janet Lee . It's the story of her life with MS in the Alaska wilderness. Very good book but it's also made me have second thoughts about a lot of my recent life choices. Crossword puzzles and such are really good for our MS minds. I may not be good at it but it helps keep our minds working. Also playing cards. If I play rummy every day I can tell a difference in my thought processes. Landscaped my yard with perennial beds and a herb garden. Even help my neighbors pick out plants. Right now I am in the midst of finals and wish I could do any of my hobbies. Haven’t even go te Christmas tree up yet… Am swamped under essay tests!! Need to quit stalling and start writing.
