CLINICALLY PROVEN EFFICACY:

Many of us are already very aware of the benefits of Alpha Hydroxy Acids in

cosmetic applications. When we talk about formulating effective natural skin

care products, Alpha Hydroxy Acids always come to mind. What other natural

additives have been clinically proven to produce such miraculous results? L+

Lactic Acid, which can be regarded as the human body's alpha hydroxy acid, is

one of the most well known and effective of the AHAs. Lactic Acid is present in

sour milk, yogurt, kefir, and the like. It is also the mildest AHA, water

soluble, and possesses strong moisturizing properties. What kind of CLINICALLY

PROVEN RESULTS can AHA Products formulated with L+ Lactic Acid produce?

>Skin Rejuvenation: AHAs reduce corneocyte adhesion and accelerate cell

proliferation within the deeper basal layer of the skin. This exfoliating action

of AHAs occurs as a result of their ability to break the bonds between dead skin

cells that form at the surface of the skin. Skin normally has a dead layer of

cells at its surface (the corneocyte layer), and AHAs can speed up the normal

process of skin cell regeneration and sloughing. This results in increased

flexibility of the skin as well as decreased formation of large dry skin flakes

>Increased Ceramide Levels: A recent study showed a ceramide level increase of

38% in skin to which Lactic Acid was applied over a four week period. (See

>Increased Collagen Production: There may well be increased Procollagen and Type

1 Collagen that occur in the deeper Dermis layer with long term use of AHAs (BC

>Improved Elasticity & Water Retention: When Lactates are compared with other

moisturizing agents (Sorbitol, Na=PCA, Glycerin) in Clinical Tests evaluating

skin softening, improvement in elasticity and water-holding capacity, the

Lactate outperforms them all, boasting a near 20% improvement in elasticity (as

compared to Glycerin's 10%), and a water-holding capacity nearing 90 (compared

>Superior Absorption: An In Vitro Study on human skin measured the percent

absorbed of dose applied of L+ Lactic Acid. An oil in water emulsion containing

5% L+ Lactic Acid was applied. At a PH of 2-4 these are the absorption

percentages measured in the different layers of skin:

Stratum Corneum= Approx 25%,

Viable Epidermis = Approx 9-15%

Dermis = Up to Approx 9%

>Low Irritation Potential: Using a concentration of 5% Acid at PH 3, Irritation

is rated on a scale of 1-4 with the following results: L+ Lactic Acid: 2.2,

>Reduced Dryness: In a clinical test, the control shows a mean dryness score of

over 5, while the skin to which the lactic acid was applied scores a mere 2 1/2

>Regulated pH / Enhanced Antimicrobial Performance: The pH of the skin surface

ranges from 4 to 6, whereas the body's internal pH is around 7.4. The skin's

naturally lower pH is caused by a higher Lactic Acid concentration in the skin

and is referred to as the " acid mantle " , which protects the skin against

microbial and fungal infections. Raising the pH with alkaline skin care and

toiletry products reduces the effectiveness of the acid barrier. Lactic Acid is

a very effective means of adjusting the pH of various products and even enhances

the antimicrobial performance of the product versus Citric Acid. By using

Lactic Acid, it is possible to combine AHA action and/or moisturizing action

with pH regulation, allowing chemists to reduce the number of raw materials in a

The pH of our Rejuvenating Lotion Base is 3.5. We included all of the following

for their wonderful properties:

>Sodium Lactate: The use of Sodium Lactate as a moisturizer in skin care

products is one of its best-known and oldest applications. The first panel tests

for moisturizing properties were carried out more than 20 years ago. More

recently, laboratoryexperiments have proved that the moisturizing effect was

directly related to sodium lactate's water-holding capacity. In addition to this

property, Sodium Lactate will make lotions more moisturizing and less greasy by

lengthening the carbon chain of oils. When Lactates are compared with other

moisturizing agents (Sorbitol, Na=PCA, Glycerin) in Clinical Tests evaluating

>Aloe Vera: The components of Aloe Vera can be divided into the following

groups:

1. Vitamins: It is rich in all vitamins excluding Vitamin D, especially the

antioxidant Vitamins A (beta-carotene), C and E and even contains a trace of

Vit. B12, one of the very few plant sources of this vitamin. This is important

for vegetarians and vegans. 2. Enzymes: Several different types of these

biochemical catalysts when taken orally aid digestion by breaking down fat and

sugars. One in particular, Bradykinase, helps to reduce excessive inflammation

when applied to the skin topically and therefore reduces pain, whereas others

help digest any dead tissues in wounds. Lipases and proteases which break down

foods and aid digestion are present. 3. Minerals: Calcium, Sodium Potassium,

Manganese, Magnesium, Copper, Zinc, Chromium and the anti-oxidant Selenium.

Although minerals and trace elements are only needed in very small quantities,

they are essential for the proper functioning of various enzyme systems in

different metabolic pathways. 4. Sugars: These are derived from

the mucilage layer of the plant which surrounds the inner gel. and are known as

mucopolysaccharides, which enhance the immune system and help to detoxify. Aloe

Vera contains both mono and polysaccharides, but the most important are the long

chain sugars involving glucose and mannose or the gluco-mannans which I have

already referred to. These sugars are ingested whole from the gut, not broken

down like other sugars, and appear in the bloodstream in exactly the same form.

This process is known as pinocytosis. Once in the blood stream they are able to

exert their immuno-regulating effect. Some of these polysaccharides are not

absorbed but stick to certain cells lining the gut and form a barrier preventing

absorption of unwanted material so helping to prevent a " leaking " gut syndrome.

In topical preparations the sugars are also the main moisturisers. 5.

Anthraquinones: There are twelve of these Phenolic compounds which are found

exclusively in the plant sap. In small quantities, when

they do not exert their purgative effect, they aid absorption from the

gastro-intestinal tract and have anti-microbial and pain killing effects. In

some commercial health drinks, the anthraquinones are removed because of the

fear of producing abdominal pain or diarrhoea, but I feel that they are actually

beneficial in small amounts. The important ones, Aloin and Emodin, act as

painkillers. They also function as anti-bacterials and anti-virals. 6. Lignin:

This in itself is an inert substance but when included in topical preparations

it endows Aloe Vera with a singular penetrative effect so the other ingredients

are absorbed into the skin. 7. Saponins: These soapy substances form about 3%

of the Aloe Vera gel and are capable of cleansing, having antiseptic properties.

These act powerfully as anti-microbials against bacteria, viruses, fungi and

yeasts. 8. Fatty Acids: Cholesterol, Campesterol, b. Sisosterol and

Lupeol. These four plant steroids are important anti-inflammatory

agents. 9. Salicylic acid: An aspirin-like compound possessing

anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. 10. Amino Acids: The body

needs 22 amino acids – the gel provides 20 of these. More importantly, it

provides 7 out of the 8 essential amino acids the body cannot synthesize. See

>Lactic Acid: Long before the chemical structure, or even the existence, of

alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA's) were known, they were unknowingly being used as an

ingredient for improving the condition of skin. Egyptian women took baths in

sour milk in order to improve their skin. French women in the court of Louis XIV

washed their faces with old wine for the same reasons. Old fashioned facial

masks made from fruit, honey or yogurt were also unknowingly taking advantage of

AHAs as their active ingredients. Alpha-hydroxy acids are commonly found and

isolated from fruits of all sorts. That is why they are referred to as fruit

acids. For example, malic acid is found in apples, citric acid can be isolated

from most all citrus fruits and glycolic acid is commonly found in honey or

sugar cane. Another source of AHAs is from the fermentation of natural products.

Lactic acid is found in milk that has soured, and tartaric acid can be isolated

from fermented grapes (wine). It is this natural, feel

good origin of alpha-hydroxy acids that make them so appealing. Couple this

with the genuine hi-tech biochemistry that they exhibit and it is no mystery as

>Hazlenut Oil: Hazelnut Oil is heralded as an oil that helps to tone and tighten

the

skin while strengthening capillaries and assisting in cell regeneration.

Contains essential fatty acids including linoleic acid.

>Glycerin: a humectant which, through its hydro-scopic action, draws moisture

into the skin naturally.

>Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein: Nourishing, moisture balancing protien for hair and

skin. Is actually drawn to the damaged cells to repair them. Included in many

new HIGH

LINE skin creams & hair products, widely touted.

>Allantoin: Cell proliferation and rapid formation of epithelium.

Skin-irritation,

chapping and cracking of the epidermis disappear, together with other

blemishes.. When used on intact facial and body skin allantoin produces

as silky, smooth and healthy appearance. Details on the active

mechanism of Allantoin are not yet fully established, but it is assumed that

allantoin produces a transient local increase in leukocytes. Indications:

minor everyday injuries, lacerations, rhagades, cuts and burns to

stubborn and suppurating wounds, refractory ulcers of various genesis,

including the treatment of burns of varying cause and severity, for

instance, those following exposure to heat, x-ray and solar irradiation.

preparations containing allantoin also have a beneficial effect on eczema,

contact dermatitis of the hands, hyperkeratosis, paradentosis, and

aphthae. Of particular advantage is the fact that wound healing proceeds

without keloid development. In addition, internal and external hemorrhoids

respond well to suppositories and ointments with allantoin.
