From my reading, the majority of weight will be gained in the first six weeks of use. If you've been on it this long and haven't had much weight gain, you are probably going to do fine. It seems to increase your appetite and slow down your metabolism a bit. The decrease in anxiety and the increased sleep it causes also leads to a decrease in the burning of calories. It probably depends on the dose your on too. If it is helping you function, though, it may be worth a little weight gain. You have to balance the pros and cons. It seems we give up one set of evils for another! The only thing I can suggest is more activity and watch like a hawk what your child eats, if it concerns you that much......if wasn't so hyper, I'd be concerned too, but then, if he wasn't hyper, he wouldn't be taking it.....lol...... Guest guest
Hey, when we put on Risperdal I thought he could stand to gain the weight, too. He had been 36 pounds for 3 years. Now, just a year and a half later, he's 70 and only gained about an inch in height. Now we're checking out Seroquel, which is supposed to be the same, only some people are less sensitive to the side effects. But I'm not sure it's doing the same for the opposition, though. Guess I'll have to wait until we get all the way switched. She used to be so skinny - typical for kids with her heart defect - but not since she began taking things like depakote, xyprexa, risperdal, etc.! And since her last hip surgery she limps and is not as steady on her feet, so she won't walk long distances and doesn't get enough exercise anymore, which hasn't helped counteract the risperdal weight gain. Guest guest
Leah, Brook is 10 and is 52 1/2 " and at last check up in June he weighed 71lbs. But for him this was a weight gain resulting from being on the Depakote since May for seizures. Brook is not a big eater at all, he does go up and down with his appetite when his is sick, chronic ear infections. I think the weight gain is more of a metabolic action rather than just overeating, in Brook's case. We finally got him weaned off of Depakote, it took 3 months, and now he is on Lamictal for seizures and I am interested to see if he slims down some. Last time we took him off Depakote he really slimmed down a lot, but he didn't change his eating habits. Brook is in a special day class and basically only gets reverse integration, his school actually has a class called Disability Studies, where the kids learn about disabilities as an elective and then come into his class as peer buddies. He is on the young side to be there since it is a middle school and he should only be in 5th grade, but this was really the only program that was suitable for him, even though I pitched a fit. Part of the problem being that integration would be more limited at the middle school than elementary, since Brook is so low functioning. Anyway his teacher says that Brook is one of the favorites and that the peer buddies really like working with him. Essentially Brook really is a sweetheart. Guest guest
Hi all, I was scanning through things rather quickly and I noticed that someone had asked if there was a correlation between Risperdal and weight gain. I missed if anyone had answered that, but it is a common side-effect of that drug. Sue W.
