As I just clicked thru to a message, the accompanying ad was for a diet

patch... " lose

30 lbs in 30 days. Ha ha--that is SOOOO not Body for Life. This is the dumb,

unrealistic stuff we must all learn to ignore--I mean, this company is

pretending you

can lose a pound a day....7 lbs a week, which just cannot be done. Yet, there

are

people out there who will run to buy that patch and many things like it. At

least we

all know better!

Carole,

I have lost a pound a day ... when juice fasting. However, that

weight is going to be a combination of fat, water, and ... worse of

all ... muscle. I was not doing it for health or weight management

reasons, but spiritual. I just wanted to say, that companies can

create ridiculous programs that CAN cause that rapid weight loss. The

problem is not that the weight cannot be lost, but rather the health

risks associated with it. People can become seriously ill and even

die from malnutrition on such restrictive diets! You are right, it is

sad that so many companies are out to make a " quick buck " at the

expense of other's health by preying on their interest in " easy fat

loss. "

We know there is nothing easy about it!

Also, on your previous message - I don't think the lower carbs helps

chip away at the fat. Rather, the lower calories do. When people

restrict carbs, they inevitably restrict calories, and this sometimes

perpetuates the myth that lower carbs burn more fat. The reality is a

little more complicated - this is why I tell people to focus more on

finding a bar that is within their desired calorie range, that tastes

good and is not too expensive, with modest amounts of protein and

either healthy fats or fiber. Carbs are not as much a concern when

they are in the presence of protein and other factors that slow

digestion such as fiber and healthy fats.

I know there are many articles on the web that claim that lower carbs

forces the body to burn fat. This is only partially true. The body

actually requires sugars in order to burn fat. If someone restricts

carbs, then the body must turn to protein and convert protein to

carbs in order to burn fat. This is why it is tough for those on a

low carb diet to gain muscle unless they have a " carb-up " period

where they " refuel " their body with carbohydrates.

Of course, there are various qualities of carbs too. I see people who

tell me carbs make them fat, when the carbs in question are pastas

and breads, etc. If they would simply replace those carbs with carbs

from leafy green vegetables, low calorie fruits, whole grains, oats,

beans, and legumes, most of the time they'll find it wasn't the fact

that they were eating carbs, but that they were eating poor quality,

processed carbs that was the issue. Natural carbs tend to come with

vitamins, minerals, and fiber, which all aid in the fat-burning

process and minimize the impact that carbs have on blood sugar.

Take care and have a GRRRRRREAT rest of the week!

Thanks again for your input, much appreciated. Actually, you are correct about

a

sensitivity to gluten. In fact, my mom has celiac disease, which is exactly

that, an

inability to digest gluten. I've been tested for this, negative, but I have no

doubt that

my system does not particularly like wheat. I love wheat chex, for example, but

am

guaranteed a stomach ache if I eat it. Minimal amounts of wheat seem to be ok

(one

piece of ww bread a day), and oatmeal doesn't bother me. But I now realize from

looking at my prior eating habits, that an overload of wheat/flour based items

each

day was wreaking havoc on my system, and it was cumulative, getting worse day by

day. AND...I'm convinced it helped put on fat. I also don't do well with sugar

in my

diet, so I actually do best on BFL for the most part since what I am sensitive

to is

either unauthorized or not on the diet at all. Fine with me! I think if we all

learn to

better " listen " to our bodies we'd be a lot healthier....and slimmer! I've

never felt

better since I've been strictly following the BFL diet. No more headaches,

either! Our

bodies tell us all sorts of things about what we eat, but we don't tend to

listen!
