Margie,

I've heard that too. That if they eat enough of it, it can kill them. I'll

have to leave more out next time.:-) Just kidding! My dogs have had a

couple run-in's with chocolate though and always survived without any

medical intervention. I wonder how much they can eat " safely " and when it's

time to take 'em to the animal ER.

Dogs and Chocolate

Chocolate is extremely toxic to dogs <snip> I have three cats, and I think

chocolate is toxic to cats, too.

How toxic? My dog regularly gets chocolate one way or

another. She was just allergy tested and allergic to

sage, thistle, mold, beef, eggs, potatoes, wheat and

yeast.

What kind of symptoms does chocolate produce?

It depends on the dog. The beagle in the previous post was VERY

lucky. Many dogs larger than a beagle would be dead from eating that

much chocolate.

And just because your dog has never gotten sick, doesn't mean it

won't. I will try to find my link giving the symptoms. But PLEASE

believe me dogs should NEVER have chocolate. I spent 6 hours at an

emergency Vet hospital with my friend and her very large Rottie a

couple of years ago. Honey Bear weighed 110 lbs and he only ate 1

chocolate bar. It was a very looooong 6 hourts. He pulled through

but was on IVs for 3 days.

Trust me, it's not something you want to go through.

, I know what you are going through with allergies. My old

girl, Babe, a 10 yr. old Black Lab, has had allergies since 18

months. Luckily my youngest daughter is a Degreed Vet Tech. She

gives her allergy injections all summer long. Babe's not too bad in

the winter. But come Spring, without the shots, she scratches till

she doesn't have any hair in places! We always joked about having a

dog in the country who is allergic to grass, etc.

, I think even small quantities of chocolate are toxic to dogs. My

neighbor's Shelties devoured a pretty big foil wrapped

chocolate kiss. Like I said, it was impossible to determine who the culprit was

so all three of her dogs were given medicine to make

them vomit. Also, their stomachs were pumped out. It was a very unpleasant and

expensive situation for everyone. My niece in NH

has a German Shepherd (large dog) who devoured a small amount of chocolate not

too long ago. She phoned the vet and was told to let

nature run its course. Well, that night, her dog (who is housetrained) had the

worst case of diarrhea and made a stinky mess all

over the carpeting in her hallway.

, I was told that eating chocolate could be lethal to dogs. However, like I

said, my niece's German Shepherd ate chocolate and

just had diarrhea and felt sick for a while. It must be a serious problem or my

neighbor's vet would not have pumped out the

stomachs of her 3 Shelties. The chocolate that was missing was a large chocolate

kiss, and there was no way to know in advance

which dog or if more than one dog had eaten it. To be safe, I would make sure

your dog never has access to chocolate. Why not phone

your vet's office for a professional opinion (and let us all know)?
