Guest guest
I'm so glad I found this group and I now know I'm not alone. When I was younger I would always get irritated hearing my Mom chew. She opens her mouth a lot when she does. And she sucks food out of her teeth after she eats. I would make comments about it and she would just yell at me and say " your manners aren't perfect! " But what she didn't understand is that I wasn't upset because I thought she had bad manners, I was actually ANGRY about it. Then I met my husband. Oh boy. God love him, but he makes SO much noise when he eats. He doesn't open his mouth, but his jaw is so strong that it sloshes the food around when he chews. Oh it's horrible. My aunt is an open mouth chewer and my Mother in law is the same. It's awful. Strangely enough, my own chewing doesn't bother me. I'm a quiet chewer but you know how you can hear yourself like " internally " like through the inside of your ears? does that makes sense? That doesn't bother me, but anyone else, oh man I just go nuts! I have to leave the room. My little boy is 18 months and he makes some noise, but obviously he doesn't know any better so that doesn't bother me. Snoring also. My husband snores SO much and it drives me nuts. Not to mention, it keeps me awake! I have OCD also, very mild, and I don't know if it's related?
Guest guest
Oh yeah, that's me to a " t " . When I'm out and someone is making my trigger sound, I literally hate them, loathe them, and the word you used was perfect - " disgusted " ...I feel digusted and just contemptuous of them for making the sound b/c I feel it is so rude to be making a sound so loudly. When I'm in public, or somewhere that's supposed to be quiet (like in a library or something) I want to just go up to them and scream in their face to see how distracting and rude they think it is! > > > > > > Hi and welcome. > > > > > > Quite a few people here have OCD or some other anxiety disorder, as well as their sound sensitivity (4S). That is a common combination. So too is ADHD. I don't think any of these conditions cause 4S, although 4S certainly adds a lot of anxiety and distress to any other conditions that we may have. I wouldn't be surprised if 4S turned out to be an inherited neurological problem, but that is just a guess at present. There has been no genetic or neurological research, as far as I know. > > > > > > I started noticing my father's chewing noises when I was about 12. It has gradually become worse over the years. Now my wife is my trigger person. And I am a trigger person for my younger daughter, who also has 4S. > > > > > > Quite a few people find they can stand eating noises made by younger children, like your 18 month old child. And most people here are not disturbed by their own eating, I think, although some people are. > > > > > > Anyway, this is a forum where you can talk about your sound sensitivity and others will definitely understand. > > > > > > > >
