Hi all,

One theme that keeps reappearing in this group is the concept of respect for our

boundaries--which are different than the norm. I have struggle a lot with this

issue and still do, but I do feel that I have figured out empowering ways

dealing with people who are not respectful of my boundaries. Like many people

in this group I hate it when people chew gum around me. If I have made it known

to them that it hurts me and they still choose to do it then I feel

disrespected. I feel that this in fact is a healthy response. Sure we all want

the sound sensitivity to cease to exist but there is another issue here which as

standing up for yourself. I wrote a couple of articles for my blog that I feel

could be helpful to people who keep running into to this issue over and over

again--usually with the same person such as a boss, a coworker or a

mother-in-law. My suggestions may not solve the whole sound issue but you can

achieve better results getting what you want and feel better about yourself.

The first article specifically uses chewing gum as an example.

Bottom line--you usually cannot make someone stop the sound you do not like but

you do have a lot of influence and you have choices on how to respond.
