AC all the Way!!!!!!!!

To: < >Sent: Wed, February 9, 2011 12:56:05 PMSubject: medinotes/Allscripts EMR

Does anyone here use or used medinotes EMR? They have been bought out by Allscripts. I am trying to decide what to do. Allscripts wants $450/month to switch to their entire suite of products, including electronic prescribing and practice management. I was looking at the Office Ally but have concerns with price changing, etc- they have free things now but for how long and then transferring EMR's is such a pain if that changes. I can stay with medinotes one more year before support is gone but it does not qualify for the financial incentives. I have Lytec for practice management.I know many of you are happy with other systems. I know this is a big topic and has been discussed over and over but just thought I would try to find out if anyone has experience with medinotes and/or allscripts EMR.Thanks.Margaret Coughlan

I have used Allscripts Professional PM and EHR (previously A4 as noted) for about 7 years.  I have never used or seen MyWay.  While I think it's an excellent EMR in terms of funtionality, I cannot recommend it to another IMP.  Simply, it far more expensive that what is needed for a typical IMP.  Additionallly, in my experience Allscripts could care less about small practices and really milk you for every dollar they can.  Everything you might want has a $500-1000 setup fee which for a large practice is irrelevant but for solo docs a big deal.  The monthly charges are more than most other companies which I think would be fine for an average EMR.  An example is that I need a new server as mine is several years old and having some issues.  When calling Allscripts, their quote for me to purchase and have them install and transfer my data to a new server is about $13,000.  They charge 2K to install software, 3.5K to transfer data, markup the server about 40% over what I could get through Dell, etc.  They wont give any breaks even though I have a miniscule amount of data compared to most of their practices; they just treat everyone the same which screws the little guy.

That being said, I've heard MyWay is their " product " for small practices and thus maybe more affordable.  I would definitely speak with other practices that have been " converted " to ensure it was a  true conversion with good transition.

If you ask why I have Allscripts when I don't give them a strong recommendations...I had them at my old practice and had hundreds of hours of customization and 6 years of patient data in there prior to starting my IMP in 2009.  My up front costs were small (about 7K to buy the software and my data from my old practice) and I didn't want to learn a new EMR and reinput all my data.  Thus, I've just chosen to pay a slightly higher yearly cost and deal with their lack of committment to small practices to avoid the hassles with changing.

A little more information would help.  Allscripts has 3 products, Enterprise, Professional, and MyWay.  Professional used to be called A4, MyWay used to be called Mysis.  I participated in a 2 hr review of all of them, and I used A4 for an extended time during locum tenens work.  Both Allscripts  MyWay and Professional are good enough to consider, depending on your committment.  If they will covert your database for free and the $450 is just month to month, I would either  in a heartbeat, you have little to lose.  If they converted for free and the committment was a year, I would still try MyWay, which is simpler than Professional but surprisingly user-friendly.  For a longer committment, you would want to test the product yourself pretty thoroughly.
