I'm a Canadian, so I have no experience whatsoever with the US system, but it sounds like you need a lawyer. I can't offer any advice, unfortunately. All I can do is keep you in my thoughts and pray that you are able to focus your energy on preparing yourself mentally and physically for your surgery so that you can recover properly. I don't know if it would have been different if I had been working at that time, or had worked prior, which neither were the Case for me, at that time. It seems most people you talk to about this are turned down the first time and it always seems you need a lawyer to get the benefits you deserve. He will request an appeal and all the medical documentation necessary. If they don't win you don't pay. They usually take 25% of the 1st award and there is a cap amount they can't go over. Social Security will let you know that amount. (my long term disability said they will pay that - it gets them off the hook) I don't know where you are but if you are near central NY I have a food attorney. In September I was turned down and he immediately filed. I had my hearing Dec17th. It was different, it was a video hearing. But the judge told me on the day of the hearing he was going to grant me the disability award. One thing to know is they always turn you down the 1st time - it is not you! If you don't get an attorney they have the option of having the hearing within a year and they usually have a 6-8 month waiting list for hearings. let me know if I can be of any further help - good luck Central New York anyone deal wiht ssi > Ugh! I used to work (about 15 yrs ago) with Dept of Social Services as a Medicaid Examiner. So don't give up! Hi Tommi, Also apply for SSI for , the help is there and you will need it. Unfortunately, they will deny the 1st time, but definitely be persistent. If you have problems at all with a case worker reqarding SSI or Medicaid, go to the person's supervisor. If necessary go to the Commissioner of Social Services in your county (if in US) and call a fair hearing (with the state DSS) if necessary, especially if it is not done in a timely fashion. Unfortunately, some have a hardened heart and drag their feet because they may be overworked or many times people who apply are trying to abuse the system, so they are very skeptical and causious.
