Guest guest
I'm the freshest in the pack but will dare to give some humble advice. I'd just lucked out and bought (stole pretty much at $150) a solid oak no metal parts bunk-bed. Lo-o-o-ove yard sales! I'm sure the bed has had a lot of time to gas-off whatever it was varnished with. Just have to make sure it comes from smoke/pet/mold (e.g. wasn't stored in the basement for the last 20 years) free house. If in doubt – ask. I've had to throw away a nice leather couch just because I didn't ask the owners about smoking and my " nose test " didn't do a good job or the couch has been aired out for awhile. But as soon as it was in an enclosed space it started to drive me nuts with all that cigarette smoke smell. Check your local craiglist. Personally, I would even pay MORE for the nice used peace of furniture as opposed to the new one just for the sole purpose of it being gassed-off. Another thing I'm not happy with new furniture (Sorry IKEA, LOVE your style but…) is that it's almost always made of plywood or has parts of it. Though, if you are like me and can sacrifice principles for the looks, it can be painted or sealed to prevent toxic fumes from evaporating. Good luck, Kim
