Guest guest
Hi ! No I don't think that will make it worse to listen to white noise during that time. You have been doing really well avoiding the earplugs. The thing is, you are studying for exams which is stressful enough. So, that fact alone could be intensifying your anxiety for the sounds. You need to do what will relax you so you can do well in school. I don't think listening to white noise can make things worse. Earplugs are the thing I worry about because it blocks all sound. But do what you need to when you are studying. During the times you are not, then try to work on the other ways to deal with the sound (CBT). That's good you left a note for your neighbor and I really hope they listen to you. keep us posted on that! > > Hello everyone, > Most of you may be aware of my problem at the moment. I am a post-graduate student studying for exams which are in just a few days and living next door to neighbours who leave their dogs outside for hours on end and which howl and bark very, very loudly. I have avoided wearing earplugs and listening to my ipod and so instead have been using sound enrichment. However, when I'm studying, I can still hear the God-awful howling of the dogs above my white noise machine. I finally posted a note through my neighbour's door asking them to bring their dogs in at night which hopefully they will comply with. My question is, rather than sitting anticipating the noises while I'm studying, do you think it would worsen my anxiety if I were to listen to white noise on my ipod at this time to make things a bit easier for me? I don't want to worsen my anxiety but I certainly don't want to fail my exams xxx >
Guest guest
Hi Darlene, Great to hear from you and thank you so much for your advice. I'm glad you don't think it could hurt to listen to white noise in my iPod. I am having to endure the dog howling just now, it is actually painful to listen to and I don't think anyone who doesn't have noise sensitivity would revel in hearing it howling and yelping constantly. I have decided that I'm just going to listen to white noise while I study and if I hear it while I'm relaxing, will either try to endure it or put some music on to block it out. I know this is avoidance. I just don't see why I have to sit here anxiously anticipating this awful noise when the neighbours don't give a hoot about it. My contract for the rent runs out in April. I reeeallly didn't want to have to move, especially as I have so much work to do but I see no other option as this is getting in the way of my enjoyment here. xxx > > > > Hello everyone, > > Most of you may be aware of my problem at the moment. Guest guest
Hello! Yes, I would advise a move. I, unfortunately, own my home and cannot move. When I first came here, I had spiritual neighbors who meditate and such. They were SO HAPPY I bought the place and displaced a chained dog that made their life crazy! Unfortunately, people move and you can never control who your new neighbors are, unless you are rich enough to buy acreage. Since you rent, you will have to move. (See if someone can ask them if THEY are planning to move first!) My horrid neighbors told me they will never get another dog after these two die and they are planning to move! Does NOT make ME feel better that their NEXT neighbors won't have to hear dogs yelling! And I strongly suggest getting some Ohropax and YOU be the judge as to what it does FOR YOU! Guest guest
Hi everyone, I know earplugs work for some people and I do enjoy wearing them but last year I relied too heavily on them and I'm sure I became more sensitive to noise as a result. I'm not sure if moving is an option Sky. I hope so but where I live is quite a deprived area and all the houses seem to be like this. I only recently moved from a flat which I was sharing with someone who had borderline personality disorder which I found unbearable, I didn't forsee I'd have even greater problems here. For the time being though, it is reassuring that I can wear my ipod and listen to white noise to mask the sounds when I'm studying. Unfortunately, there are too many inconsiderate neighbours out there. I tiptoe around my house for fear that it will disturb someone, while others blast music and let their dogs bark through the night. Hopefully when I finally buy a property, it'll be a few hundred ft away from my neighbours! > > Exams only come around every so often, better to take what measures you can to ensure you can study well rather then suffer through. > > I would suggest if you don't want to wear the ear plugs all the time, to just wear them up until your study has finished then return to how you were before. > > Good luck > Sent from my BlackBerry® smartphone on 3 > > Could this really make things worse? > > Hello everyone, > Most of you may be aware of my problem at the moment. Guest guest
I agree with Darlene. I began to use them practically 24/7 and EVERY sound became too overwhelming when I took the earplugs out and when I put them in I was ennured of their effect. I went to Dr. Jastraboff's clinic at Towson University and over 3 months I weened myself off the over-use of the earplugs. Now I only use them when absolutely necessary. I currently use the Ipod at work to keep me focused, a sound soother while I sleep (and on occasion earplugs), and I take Omega3 vitamins which as reduced my reactive responses. > > > > > > > > Hello everyone, > > > > Most of you may be aware of my problem at the moment. Guest guest
I agree with Darlene. I began to use them practically 24/7 and EVERY sound became too overwhelming when I took the earplugs out and when I put them in I was ennured of their effect. Guest guest
This is similar to my own experience. I used earplugs last year to avoid having to endure my neighbour's loud television but started to become so reliant on them that I was scared to remove them when I left the house and used them when I was driving though this was no good as it almost became an out-of-body experience when I knew I was driving but couldn't hear anything. At the moment though, because of my exams I am more prone to anxiety than normal and so every continuous intrusive noise I hear, I immediately think it's going to affect my exam performance and so using the white noise (or rather, pink noise) shields me from that, though I know it's not a long-term plan. I miss hearing the birds singing when I'm studying, it makes it seem a little less serious somehow, but the dog's barking is unbearable. > > > > > > > > Hello everyone, > > > > Most of you may be aware of my problem at the moment. Guest guest
I'm glad white noise has helped you Curtis. I don't know why but my sound sensitivity applies mainly to my house, anyone else have this? For example, while I'm at university, someone could slam a door or I could hear dogs barking and I barely flinch. If someone slams a door that is audible from my house, I feel like I have to go and investigate and the barking dogs make me extremely anxious. I'm not sure why this is. Anyway, the pink noise I am using has been my saviour for the past couple of days. > > > > > > Hello everyone, > > > Most of you may be aware of my problem at the moment. I am a post-graduate student studying for exams which are in just a few days and living next door to neighbours who leave their dogs outside for hours on end and which howl and bark very, very loudly.
