geographic information systems.  computers.  meetings KILL me, but i have the luxury of being able to close my door and hang out with my computer and my ipod.  (of course i didnt mention i am currently unemployed!)

What jobs/careers do you all have and how does your sound sensitivity affect your work/job choice? (I'm in the process of choosing a college major)

I teach high school health and PE. Gum chewing is the least of the behaviors that goes on here so having a rule prohibiting it is not realistic. I only say something if it is too loud. When I taught elementary it was easier to enforce. Tapping pens and drumming on the desk are things that I can't tolerate.

I just started working for an advertising agency and being with my boss in the same room is a real torture....she smacks when talking, drinking water...yes.... She brings crunchy snacks to the office and constantly clears her throat.... Someone kill me. Sent from my iPhone

i used to have a boss who thought that gum smacking was cute.  he was a very large and intimidating man.  he couldnt understand why it bothered me, so he continued to chew it around me, and purposefully did it louder in my presence.  eventually we had a long walk and a chat that ended with me being so upset that i basically had a tantrum and threw my sunglasses, and because of the whole incident i was not able to stay at the job.  it was a military situation where we worked 12+ hours a day 6-7 days a week and there was just no flexibility at all in accommodating me.

Sounds like it was hell and he was the devil. We need to just disconnect from people like that. They are just bullies and enjoy hurting others, makes them feel more powerful.

Sorry.

I totally understand, my boss is a really big trigger for me, She is the loudest smacker I have ever met and so is her family. She smacks every other word when speaking, when she eats, drinks, thinks... Lol really, constantly. And she keeps making those nose sounds. And she loves chewing gum in the loudest possible way. Real hell!!! At the same time she s the nicest person ever. The new person that joined us is just like her. I am going to die soon. Sent from my iPhone

I help run and process orders for a couple of online stores, as well as

do a route delivering papers for a local newspaper in the mornings.

Working on the stores is great, because I can do them from home and any

communication can be done via email or Skype. I have control over how

sound reaches my ears and what sounds are around me.

The paper route gets me outside everyday and gives me some exercise and

the income from it is decent. Between the online stores and my route, I

can where headphones and don't have to deal too much with people. I feel

very lucky to have both jobs and am glad I don't have to do any customer

service or office work anymore. I've always struggled being in those

environments because of my sound sensitivity.

I've tried to go to college a few times, but always have problems with

the classroom setting, taking tests etc.. For me the classroom is very

noisy and I have a difficult time concentrating, thus it affects my

ability to do class work and assignments. Even the library isn't quiet.

I excel best with solitary work or activities. I don't know what I can

recommend for you as a career.

Right now, I'm just trying to survive and feel fortunate to even have a

job in this financial climate, given dealing with my sound sensitivity

every single day.
