Guest guest
Univ. of Pittsburgh has begun a phase 1 clinical trial to test a bioartifical liver assist system designed by Excorp Medical of Minnesota. The system uses healthy liver cells from pigs to improve function of critically ill patients, paying close attention to whether it can improve a patients condition until tx. or is feasible or obviate the need altogether. http://www.upmc.edu/newsbureau/bioartifical.htm They also plan to study 15 patients with encephalopathy with same treatment. One patient has already undergone treatment. She had no harmful effects durning treatment. But died 1 week later from infection. Boy, they say we don't have any heros left....in my book you have to be a HERO - Big Time - to be in this trial. Making progress 1 small step at a time.
