Dear Maurice, thank you for the advice. I am aware of the patent that Shiseido has for their arbutin. However, I am not sure exactly what their patent covers. I have tried searching for more specific information about their arbutin patent but I cannot seem to find any specific information. Also, I am aware that other major and reputable companies such as Skinceuticals(which is owned by a prestigious dermatologist) has a product called Phyto Corrective Gel which contains 5% arbutin. Therefore, I would think that the Shiseido patent may not cover all arbutin products, or companies such as Skinceuticals would be in trouble. -Do you know where I can go to find more information about Shiseido patent on arbutin?-

You can search the US Patents from http://www.uspto.gov/patft/index.html I did a quick search for Arbutin (all fields) and Shiseido (Assignee Name) and got several hits: PAT. NO. According to drugstore.com and other websites, SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Gel contains: Water, Botanical Glycosides, Uva Ursi Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Cucumber Extract, Thyme Extract, Bioflavonoids, Phenoxyethanol, Herbal Fragrance http://www.drugstore.com/qxp69015_333181_sespider/skinceuticals/phyto_corrective\ _gel.htm Maybe they changed the formula.
