I work retail. At my store, there are several people who frequently chew gum on the sales floor, including a co-manager who is a particularly enthusiastic chewer.

Well...I think most of us are aware that our problem, if mentioned to a supervisor or co-worker is usually met with either incredulity, amusement or outright scorn. I actually did mention my problem to a former supervisor at a job that I left a couple of months ago (for other, non-related reasons). She was one of those that was somewhere between incredulity and amusement. In the end, it didn't do me any good.

But we DO hold some power as consumers. We also have a certain amount of anonymity as consumers. Most retail stores have numbers on your receipt where you can leave comments, some even basically bribing you to do so with offers of coupons or entries for contest if you do so (the store I work at gives you $10 off a $30 purchase for doing so).

So where am I getting at? The next time you find half the employees of a store you enter chewing gum, call the customer service number! You don't need to be angry about it or worry about getting someone fired. Mention the gum chewing bothers you or that you find it unprofessional, but balance it out with the good things the employees did for you there. If you find a store that NEVER seems to have someone that does this, call and let them know how pleasant this makes your shopping experience there.

Admittedly, I've never actually done this. But I think this could do a lot to raise awareness in the corporate world, and make things more pleasant for us all while we shop and for any of us who work retail or in a restaurant or in any customer service environment. It's not a cure, I know, but it might make our lives a little easier to live after a time. It's some POSITIVE and PROACTIVE that we can do.
