Guest guest
{{How can I determine if the name I choose for my business already exists? Must I register my name to have ownership of it? I have done a google search for my name and I don't get any hits. Does this qualify? Thanks for any information.}} If you are going to do business under your own name as an assumed business name, you need to go to your local County Clerk's Office, the Assumed Names Division. They will ask you to perform a search of the name to make sure that it is not in existence. The cost is generally about $15.00. Your business name will then became Your Name d/b/a Your Business Name. This filing qualifies you to contact your Comptroller of Public Accounts to obtain a Sales Tax and Use Certificate so that you will not have to pay sales tax on your supplies. Additionally, you can take your Assumed Name Certificate to your local bank and establish a business account. If you are looking to create a corporation or limited liability company, you will need to contact your Secretary of State. The fees vary from state to state. They will search for the name before completing your paperwork. If you are not ready to incorporate or form a limited liability company, but would like to reserve the name you can do so for a fee. Guest guest
The first thing I'd do is plug it into Google and see what comes up. That would just be a start. Next, call your county and inquire where you apply for a " ficticious business name " . They will have search engines to see if your business name already exists in your county. These folks would be good to ask about statewide searches, not sure what's available. I am sure someone can provide more information, it's been a long time since I researched this and I've forgotten a lot of what I learned them. It's an ongoing problem LOL. > Hope this is an appropriate question for this group: > > How can you research that the business name you have chosen is not > already being used? > > -- > ********************* > Bonnie Knutson, > Business Manager > Physical Plant > Idaho State University
