Guest guest
Hi , I started really low in my upper body workouts. My lower body has always been good and I do well there. For upper body, I was starting my set of 12 with 5 lb weights... and working up to like 15 as a max... now I am up up to 25 to 30 as my max... part of the problem for me is actually getting the weights up, say for the shoulder press etc.. if I can get the weight UP to the starting position thats the hardest part... you will be fine.. I think you are doing the right thing by using lower weights and concentrating on form etc.. BUT... dont get complacent... that was part of the problem I had, for a long time I started at 5 lbs on my upper body and only went up to 20, like I was afraid to do 25 because I thought I couldnt do it... I was wrong... for a long time I stayed with the same weights and was comfortable with that, I didnt want to recognize the fact that i could do more if I tried harder, a couple of weeks I tried harder and I impressed myself. You obviously dont want to hurt yourself, etc... but dont forget to push yourself and work through it.. it CAN be done. I found this out with my lower body as well, as I said, my lower body has always been a lot stronger than my upper body. One example though is like the standing calf raises... I was doing say starting at 70 through 110 or so and I was comfortable doing them... well.. over the past couple of workouts I started pushing myself, this morning I did 255 for 12 reps and wanted to go higher! A lot of this is mental, when you tell yourself you cant do it, your body doesnt want to do it. But if you bring a positive attitude and tell yourself you CAN do it, your more likely to do it.
