Kathy,

I am so impressed by your perseverance, and you are absolutely right. The brain

is " plastic " , and just as we have laid down these reactive neural pathways, so

we CAN retrain and change them. You may have read that several people on the

group have been able to do this relatively easily. Others have found that line

of thinking almost too much to contemplate. We are so individualistic, and each

one has to find his/her way to retrain the brain, using whatever tools are

approprate for them.

Keep at it, Everyone!

Tara

Just look at stroke victims who have had to re-learn walking, speaking or other skills by using a new area of their brain. That definitely shows how plastic our brains can be. I just hope that translates into something that can be helpful for misophonia. The brain is so incredibly complex, with so many unknowns. I think there may be many underlying causes of misophonia, with misophonia being the symptom, from PTSD where there may be subconscious and immediate reactions to sounds based on a previous experience/exposures, to physical ear issues, to heredity, to different wiring in the brain, related to autism, Aspergers or Schizophrenia (higher incidence with these), or even different chemical/hormones released and the activity of related receptors in the brain, and it may be a case where eventually there may not be just one possible “cure”, but many – based on each individual’s case or “cause” (similar to finding a cause and relieving migraines). That’s why I like to read here about everyone’s theories, ideas, experiences, history. What may not help some, may still help others. This really is an amazing forum with everyone contributing so much information, brainstorming, and especially support!
