He drinks colite (I think that's what it's called a powder mixed in a big jug) I agree with the rest of you the prep is far worse than the procedure. I actually wasn't totally out and found it interesting to watch. There is one thing Phil can't tolerate - chicken broth or soup. It's funny because prior to being diagnosed he had some chicken soup and threw up. Then when he was in the hospital after his ERCP when he was badly infected he had a day of nausea and had chicken broth and threw up. Now anytime anyone tries to bring him chicken broth he almost gets violent. It's so funny! When they ask him if he's allergic to anything he says chicken broth and I add that if you don't want to see his violent side (which is almost none existant) don't bring it to him. The transplant center wanted me to have one, so we compromised on stool smears but when they came back positive my PCP said we need to identify the source of the bleeding, just in case it needs to be treated. I wonder if that is safe. I have IBS and had a colonscopy about 2 years ago. The blood was found in my stool smears too. I very seldom have dark stools. I have never had dark stools from bleeding but occasionally get small bright red streaks from tiny ruptures near the anus. Guest guest Posted September 19, 2011 Report Share Posted September 19, 2011 Amy....while my daughter was in the hospital for her 'just-short-of-one-year' stay, she, too had severe colitis. She was on an IV diet for 6 weeks - unable to eat by mouth. Her intestines were not absorbing nutrition due to the severe inflammation. When she did begin eating again, they started her on one food at a time at each meal for several days...chicken, then rice, etc. It was a celiac protocol. Until the inflammation had calmed down, nothing could be taken by mouth. All meds were IV. That was three years ago and she is doing pretty darn well with only a few surgeries and short stays at the hospital. You need to be careful what you try to eat and how much at a time. Guest guest Posted September 19, 2011 Report Share Posted September 19, 2011 Hi Amy, I have had this issue also. My Docs have me take Align daily and it has helped. Align is an over the counter pro-biotic. You should ask your doctor about it when you see her/him again if it would be good for you or not. It isn't a cure-all, but it does help balance things out. I also have had problems with everything going-in and going immediately out. It's no fun at all. I have found that the best diet for it has been the BRAT diet has been the best for me. I don't know if you have tried that or not. It's Banana's, Rice (White, Plain - Steamed Rice), Apple Sauce (no Sugar added), and Toast (totally plain) - you can eat Rice Cakes too (totally plain also). It's a boring diet, but it seems to work in regards to keeping food in for a little bit at least. Anyway, I hope you feel better soon!
