Hi everyone..I was just curious if anybody has noticed a change in their sensitivity over their lives. I find that as I get older or as times goes on, whatever.. The worse it gets. I'm not sure if it's b/c my tolerance is wearing down, like I can take it less and less the more I hear it, or if it's a neurological thing, like potentiation. Anyway, I'm just curious if you've noticed that your sensitivity is getting worse, has gotten better, or hasn't changed at all since you've first developed it? Guest guest
I'd say mine is the same or even better at times. I've worked a lot with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and have stopped dwelling on this problem like I used to. I used to think about it constantly, thinking " why me " , and thinking that my life sucked but then I stopped that. My life could be SO much worse. Once I stopped the negativity and started therapy, things got better. I still have issues, but I can work through them better. Life goes on with or without this problem and I'm not going to let this stop me from living. I will win. > > Hi everyone.. > > I was just curious if anybody has noticed a change in their sensitivity over their lives. I find that as I get older or as times goes on, whatever.. Guest guest
Darlene, You have the best attitude! I have to congratulate you on working on the problem and finding a happy medium when dealing with the noise irritations. You set a great example. > > > > Hi everyone.. > > > > I was just curious if anybody has noticed a change in their sensitivity over their lives. Guest guest
I agree. And it's important to be very persistent because the brain is biased to remembering negative experiences over positive ones. Guest guest
Slowly worse. I have added more trigger sounds over time, and I also react to more people. Ever since discovering this site a year ago, I have also been more conscious/self-conscious about 4S, which has exacerbated the 4S a bit. Nevertheless, I am *SO* glad to have found out that my secret aversion to sounds was a known (if little-known) condition that other people experience as well. > > Hi everyone.. > > I was just curious if anybody has noticed a change in their sensitivity over their lives. Guest guest
I would say that my condition has gotten worse. But, with some skills I learned from my therapist, I've been better at knowing what situations I should or should not be in based on knowing what my reactions are going to be. I know myself a lot better now and have accepted this condition as a part of my life. I find the sound generators helpful, and wearing headphones all the time, even when I'm around others helpful to drown out those trigger sounds. I don't feel guilty for doing that anymore!!! I also don't feel as guilty asking someone to stop chewing gum etc. when they are talking to me. In fact, I asked someone just this morning, and they were like " sorry, I didn't realize" and threw their gum out. It AMAZED me that they did that. But, there are a lot of considerate people out there who just don't realize it is a problem for others, but care enough to stop around you. For me that makes a world of difference, and I was able to interact with her on a completely different and better level with the gum gone. -Randall
Guest guest
Thank you , I really appreciate that kind comment. I try my best to stay positive as I feel it really does make a difference. I figure I'm going to have this problem whether I'm happy or always angry. Being upset or angry doesn't fix anything right? So, I may as well try to be the happiest person I can be. I live for the moments that this problem doesn't surface. So, when the problem does occur, I remind myself that " this too shall pass " ... and it does. > > > > > > Hi everyone.. > > > > > > I was just curious if anybody has noticed a change in their sensitivity over their lives. Guest guest
I would say that the anxiety/emotional part of the disorder got significantly better when I discovered the word Hyperacusis, which led me to the term Soft Sound Sensitivity Syndrome. That day was a life changer. I think that I Google-d "eating noises bother me" or something to that effect and it led me somehow to Hyperacusis.net. Just knowing that there are other people out there in the world that have what I have made a big difference on my reactions. I used to have a whole sort of crying fit where I would rethink in my mind over and over again" Why is this happening to me? Why does no one understand it? Why am I the only person in the world that has this?" etc. When I was able to put a name to it I was freed from most of those questions. Since then, instead of being irritated, upset, and hopeless when I'm triggered, I can just be irritated and upset. Other than that, sounds still bother me just as much today at age 18 as they did as far back as I can remember being in Kindergarten or so.
