Is there a different principle at work when taken as part of the AP? Anyone know? When I had to take amoxicillin for a sinus infection several months ago, my doctor said to stop the tetracycline until I had finished with the amoxicillin. A couple of reference books I have say they should not be taken concurrently either. Liz G

That's the way I understood it as well - that you just stop the tetracycline antibiotic for a week or so and take the penicillin drug, then restart the tetracycline. There is no problem in stopping the tetracycline antibiotic for that time. Chris.
Guest guest
My pharmacist said both the penicillans and tetracyclines act on the same part of the bacteria protein - so they fight for the same binding site. This means that they are a lot less effective together - but don't cause a " problem " Re: rheumatic ASO Titre >From: " Liz G. Guest guest
In article <001c01beac34$0cb8b120$93011fac@MSTAHL>, Mike Stahl <mstahl@...> writes >My pharmacist said both the penicillans and tetracyclines act on the same >part of the bacteria protein - so they fight for the same binding site. This >means that they are a lot less effective together - but don't cause a > " problem " Don't think so. Tetracyclines are bacteriostatic ie. they stop cell division, whereas penicillins are bacteriocidal - they kill the bacteria. But they need the bacteria to be dividing to do so. So, if you stop them dividing, the penicillins become ineffective. ------- Regards, Dr Graham Chiu Prospective Internet Observational Study in Arthritis Home Page http://www.compkarori.com/arthritis/ Contribute at http://www.compkarori.com/arthritis/contrib.htm Data Entry at http://www.compkarori.com/cgi-local/piosa.cgi
Guest guest
Dear Liz: I have recently had dental work done and as a result, had to take amoxcillin prior to appts. with dentist as I have mitral valve prolapse. My apptsl fell on my non-minocin days , so one day I took minocin, one day amoxcillin. One day the coincided, so I called my rheumatologist (actually it's today that it happened!) and he said to take the dental antibiotics since I had the dental work done today (Friday), and move the minocin (100 mgs) to Saturday. So I have done two days of amoxcillin this week and will have also done 3 days of minocin by tomorrow. However, I know this is different in that it's not continuous amoxcillin like you would need for sinuses. When I DID have a sinus infection one month ago, I had to go off the AP (which I had just started) so it did not conflict with Cefzil (I don't know what type that is.). Now I'm wondering if I inactivated the prophylactic antibiotic I need for dental work. Oh well, (knock wood), I hope not. You raise a really good question, one I'm sure we all need more info on. I don't know if my doctor's advice applies in your case...but I though I'd throw it our there. You
Guest guest
I just posted before having read your reply to Liz. I need some advice. I took Minocin Monday, Trimox Tuesday for a dental appointment, Minocin Wednesday, nothing Thursday, Trimox Friday for a dental apppointment and I had been planning on taking my Minocin Saturday. Should I take it? Also, I wonder if I inactivated the Trimox which would've been real bad because I do not want heart valve damage. Maybe it's all okay since, in effect, I stopped the Minocin, since I didn't take it the same day (just alternating days)? Could you reply, or Ethel, or Dr Chiu? Worriedly yours,

You might have to stop Minocin for a week and repeat the amoxicillin, then restart the Minocin, just to make sure. Chris.
