I've been exposed to these conditions for about three years now. I am very ill all the time and I believe I finally know why. Do the pics on the link look dangerous to anyone ? I need to work for a pay check but my health is getting worse every day I go to work. the pics are of my workplace. Is this a workers comp. case or a toxic tort case? I did tell my employer about the conditions a year ago and they did nothing to fix it.http://photos./bc/getz66?d & .flabel=fld1 & .src=ph I hope link works

pictures I would't expect that your employer is going

to be forth coming with any help unles forced. My

suggestion is to file a first report of Injury and

take those photos to your doctor telling your

symptoms. If you are on a hmo get a referral to a good

alergist that knows about molds.Like Marina I have

suffered the same symptoms. Listen to Marina!

Harrassment is the norm. You are bot crazy but chances

are that you are sick. I am now at the stage where

Marina was. I will soon have to make a choice between

my health and job. I have a tough time going into a

store now without my eyes watering and coughing like I

am chocking and I am in my building going on three

years. Marina expressed my symptoms exactly.

,

Have you called OSHA yet? All workers are free to call OSHA at any time

without recrimination from their employer. Hopefully you can get better

quality prints made than can be seen on the internet. Maybe find someone

with a better camera. Try to get pictures of any large floor puddles, since

this is a safety hazard regulated by OSHA, as well as a health hazard not so

firmly regulated. Send top quality pictures with your OSHA inspection

request. OSHA will probably not inspect, but will send a letter to your

employer stating their need to provide a safe an healthy working

environment. You can also call your local board of health. One sick worker

will not get much response, but several ailing employees should draw

attention. So, get as many signatures as you can get on your inspection

requests.

As you are learning, mold and damp workplaces constitute a health hazard

which must be taken seriously because of their severe long term health

consequences. There are several very reputable reports on this subject. Look

up NIOSH.gov on the internet. Search for an online book on indoor air

quality, titled something like " Indoor Air Quality- A Guide for Building

Owners and Facility Managers " . This is a long PDF file, a full book on IAQ.

You can probably find sections that apply to your situation. But remember,

these are still guidelines, not regulations. Your employer must be made to

realize that employee absenteeism and heath care expenses (employer

provided?) are being adversely affected by building negligence, not to

mention decreased quality of life and shortened life expectancy (possibly a

savings on the pension program).

A good reference is " Is Indoor Mold Contamination a Threat to Health? " ,

found at

http://www.doh.wa.gov/ehp/oehas/mold.html

Another good reference is published by North Carolina ative

Extension Service

North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C., found at

http://www.ces.ncsu.edu/depts/fcs/housing/docs/fcs3605.html

And closer to home is New York City Department of Health - Facts About Mold

Thank you for your response Gil. But now that a few years have past and I am

quite sick is there any way I can collect workers comp ? or do anything else

? quitting is not the answer, there are other people in

the building and they are beging to get the symptoms that I have already

developed. So it's not so simple as to just get another job, what about the

other people ? there must be some kind of recourse. thanks again.

The photolink worked OK. The pictures are not the best quality, but do

suggest you are working in a poorly maintained building with significant

moisture problems. I assume your boss works in a better location than that,

and cannot understand the health implications of

what you are claiming. I understand very well, since that is what happened

to me, and probably to many people reading the sick building web site

regularly. If you do not have too high a seniority benefit at your job, your

best bet for health is to find a job in a healthier environment. Even a pay

cut is worth improved health.

Unfortunately, prolonged exposure to such an environment can leave

lasting effects. My main symptom started as a light cough.

Over time this began to be accompanied by lung congestion, similar to

asthma, but probably more properly called hypersensitivity pneumonitis. I

eventually had the very bad location fixed, but am now so sensitive to some

offending organism that I start coughing within 15 seconds of entering a

problem location, though I am fine outside and in my home. These offending

locations are no longer confined to just the workplace.

Whatever your health effect, if you get somewhat better on the weekend,

and significantly better on vacation, the work site

is probably the major cause of your problem. The longer you stay, the

worse you will get. So, if no one with decision making authority at your

company believes you, I suggest moving on.

There are numerous web sites discussing health problems related to moldy

buildings. If you think your boss is open to reason,

I can send you some references, all of which have been found on the sick

building web site over the last 18 months.

Good luck.

Gil
