We are considering looking into a voice output communication system for our daughter. Does anyone have a favorite recommendation? OR better yet, is there a tech center closer than the one in Orlando where we could go to observe and try different devices? We live in pompano. I'm starting at zero knowledge here so any input would be welcome. My dtr is 15 and very lowverbal. Thanks,

Sherry,

I'm not aware of any retail stores in this area (that doesn't mean that there

aren't any). However, I am aware of a company called DynaVox Sytems at

http://www.dynavoxsys.com. Perhaps they can point you in the direction of a

local retailer.

Hi Sherry,

My daughter is 13, primarily non-verbal, and our lives were changed by getting a Dynavox a couple of years ago. My daugher can now tell me what she wants, how she's feeling and answer questions in school.

There are two ways to go. Contact the Nova Speech and Communication Disorders Clinic to set up an evaluation appointment for your daughter. There is a waiting list but you can go and see the various devices available. They have a tremendous library of materials and they display the various devices. They also run workshops regularly where they demonstrate all the different devices from low to high tech.

Contact:

The other way is to insist on finding out who the augmentative specialist is with the school system for your area and setting up an evualuation with him/her. That will get the ball rolling. Diane Marton

You can call Nova SE University's Speech and Disorders Clinic in Davie ... my son receives speech therapy there and uses the Dynamite and the DynaWrite machines ... they have a great staff that specializes in Augmentative communication devices .... I don't know if you can try them out or not, but I'm sure you can get some direction from them ....

You can request an evaluation through the school system and get a device for your child at no cost, if he/she qualifies. Contact your speech-language pathologist and ask to be referred to the AAC team. They will evaluate your child, call a meeting and reveal the results. Your child will be provided with a device and consultative services from the team to your school speech path and classroom teacher. Communication/Lanaguage Goals and benchmarks will be added to the IEP that include the AAC device chosen.

Hope this helps.
