I'm looking for the abbreviation for the following minerals for our

information booklet - if anyone can help, I'd GREATLY appreciate it! I can't

seem to find these two on line anywhere!

Bitumen & Sulphur

Thanks so much!

Hi,

You might consider using " Wikipedia.org " .

The abbreviation/chemical element name for Sulfur (Sulphur) is S

Unlike sulfur, bitumen appears to be of organic origin, rather than

inorganic. It is a category of organic liquids which are thick, black, and

sticky, including but not limited to asphalt and tar two of the most common

forms.

" Bitumen in the form of asphalt is obtained by fractional distillation of

crude oil. Bitumen being the heaviest and being the fraction with the

highest boiling point, it appears as the bottommost fraction.

" Bitumen in the form of tar is obtained by the destructive distillation of

organic matter, usually coal. "

Most geoligists agree the naturally occurring deposits of bitumen formed

from the remains of ancient, microscopic algae and other once-living

things. Some geologists believe that bitumen and other hydrocarbons heavier

than methane originally derive from deep inside the mantle of the earth

rather than biological sources.

Hope this helps,

Pam
