Guest guest
My daughter with 4S used to scratch her face - one cheek - which caused our other daughter to get upset on several occasions about the self-harm. The daughter with 4S has stopped scratching herself now. Perhaps people being more aware of her reactions and trying to avoid triggering her has helped, plus she is a little older (16 instead of 14). She also " thumps " things - e.g. bangs her fist or her mouse on her desk a lot in frustration. While that could be other things too (frustration with homework being one), 4S certainly adds to the stresses in her life. > > and what about self injury?? Guest guest
We recently 'redid' her room to make the change from little girl to teen ager and she wanted the walls painted cream to match the ceiling and little of anything on the walls. She packed up all toys and mementos and has virtually nothing besides her bed and two bedside tables in her room. She usually keeps the lights off and runs a air purifier in her room at all times. THe only thing that is ever out of place are her clothes, which live onthe floor, but seeing as they are all black, it just 'works' from the decorating perspective.Funny kid.To: Soundsensitivity Sent: Sun, March 14, 2010 5:53:47 PMSubject: Re: How far is too far? Guest guest
The point about self-injury is a good one: I think very many of us do it. I tend to pound the heaviest object I can find against my thigh or dig my nails into my skin when it becomes too much. Sometimes the frustration is so strong that somebody HAS to get hurt, and it's either you or the person triggering you. In my opinion, " too far " is when you get scared later of what you've done. -Kate > > and what about self injury?? Guest guest
The worst moment in my 4s violent streak was when I was laying in bed and my kitty was nestled beside me, between me and the wall. (my bed was against the wall). I didn't realize just how close we were laying to it. But my kitty was licking herself and, in a fit of fury, I backhanded her and I heard her poor little body thud against the wall. PETA don't come hunt me down. Luckily, my cat is fine. happy, healthy. But at that moment, I thought I'd killed her. I rocketed up out of bed, convinced I'd snapped her neck. I still can hear her hitting the wall. I started crying, apologizing. It was such an awful moment. From that day on, I have been super super vigilant about keeping my 4s temper firmly in check. Now, I do still slam things. just inanimate object things. When I was a cashier and a customer had a trigger (sniffing, snapping gum, etc.) I would just stand there and punch my register keys with as much force as I could muster or drum my fingers really hard on the register, even start stomping my foot some. I have a bad habit of slamming things around when I'm hypercharged on trigger sounds. Tammy P.s. I love my kitty. She's my baby. Guest guest
1. How far have you gone in an episode of 4s rage? Does your " too far " include aggression to the point of physically hurting someone, even if accidentally? 2. If this 4s has been going on for awhile, how many " violent offenders " currently In prison or of " wanted " status ALSO have 4s? Kip, those are two very important questions and I've wondered about them too. I have never physically hurt anyone because of my 4S/Hyperacusis, although the thought does cross my mind, but it is mainly to get the painful sound to stop, not wanting to intentionally hurt someone. Growing up it was instilled in my being that you don't hurt other people or animals, that it isn't appropriate, and the consequences of doing so are grave. So, instead I took all that anger and frustration and pain out on inanimate objects (bruising myself in the process or breaking something that I ought shouldn't have) or taking it out on myself, by hitting my head and slapping my ears (because that is the location of where the pain lies, trying to externalize it). I even tried committing suicide over this. I have since come to realize that I am still hurting someone: ME. With the help of my therapist, I don't nearly reach the point of wanting to hit my head or get as deeply depressed as much over dealing with this (but still do get overwhelmed by my 4S/Hyperacusis). But, it comes at the expense of being more isolated by not putting myself into situations with other people where sounds will drive me to that point. Which means that I am unable to do a lot of jobs that require me to be around people and sounds. I also don't have much of a social life. A good thing though is, because I wear Sound Generators and headphones all the time, I'm unable to slap my ears, which has been helpful. As to your other question (2), I have also pondered if many " violent offenders " currently in prison, are due to people who are so overwhelmed by their 4S or Hyperacusis that they couldn't live with it or endure it any longer, which led to their crime. When some people know your weakness, like sound sensitivity, they may use it against you and be cruel to you about it, which could lead someone to becoming a " violent offender " . We all have breaking points and different pain thresholds and ability to cope. I tended to have a higher pain threshold growing up so just endured it as best I could, although it made life and school much harder and more painful than it should have been. As I've gotten older, my pain threshold for 4S/Hyperacusis has decreased which has made it harder to endure. This is why I am thankful to each and every parent or person who is trying to help their children or others who struggle with this condition. Because, they really do make a big difference in the lives of those of us who suffer from this. Thank you! -Randall

Guest guest
I have never acted out violently with my 4S rage though I have thoughts of what I'd " like " to do. I tend to get more irritated and frustrated with myself as a way of venting my anger. I have been working a lot on turning my negative thoughts into positive ones, or at least finding humor in my " what I'd like to do " thoughts. As far a people in prison having 4S... I don't know about that. I'm sure there are some, seeing as our numbers are growing. But I'm not sure I'd say it was the 4S that helped get them there. From the group we have here, and those I've been talking with for a long time now, it seems we are all very caring individuals. We tend to think of others before ourselves even to the point of making ourselves worse off. I don't know... that's just what I've observed. You all are such great people who have been dealt a crappy hand with 4S. Keep smiling. > > I'm currently having an issue controlling my episodes of rage due to 4s. > I'm wondering two things: > > 1. Guest guest
i have, in my last apartment, i lived there a little over 10 yrs. and was a good tennant and i had some good and bad next door and upstairs neighbors. the worst ones, i finally had it, i had told the manager many times and they supposedly got warnings so when they woke me at 2ish am i grabbed my 8 lb. weight, stood on my bed and banged the ceiling like a crazy person, i smile as i write that because it felt good actually. i put 4 dents in the ceiling that time, another time, it was next door and i YELLED, SHUT UP and kicked the wall, i had boots on and my boot went right into the wall, pretty big hole, i told my manager what i did and why, she did roll her eyes but when i moved out, she didn't take it out of my deposit because i'd always paid on time and she knew aside from the noise triggers, i am somewhat sane. here, where i moved 3 months ago thinking it was a decent place and to save money, i learned that you don't know a place till you actually move in. i was shocked when after moving in, i'm on the 3rd floor w/balcony facing the street, nice view, i got here on a friday night and was so tired, exhausted and sat. morning i was awakened by the loudest music i'd ever heard in any apartment at 7:30 a.m. i honestly couldn't believe what i was hearing, it was who i now call 'downstairs guy' and another name i won't write here.... i took a hammer and started pounding it on the floor, the music played on and i thought, what have i got myself into'????? i was able to record his music on my phone but i finally went down and knocked on his door and the music was so loud it took a while and he finally opened it and i said 'could i plead with you to turn that down'....he stared at me with 'monster eyes' and said 'aint that loud' and shut the door. i had to listen and rage and on monday, i played what i recorded for my manager and she was shocked, or so she said. she lives here on the first floor so not sure how she couldn't know. she told me it took her 3 yrs. to get used to living here. i told her i didn't want to 'get used' to living in hell, i wanted to get out of hell. the music, loud t.v., him smoking in his apt. and on his balcony, all things i din't know when i moved here or I WOULDN'T HAVE, i got my dr. to help me GET THE HECK OUT OF HERE and should be moving to a hopefully more sane place in the next 2 wks. at my old apt. no smoking at all now and our rule was 'if you can hear it outside your apt., it's too loud' and those 2 things made all the difference. i really don't know why it isn't a law that apartments have to be soundproofed, otherwise it's like the other tennants are right in the next room which they are. if anyone has ideas how to sound proof at least one room in an apartment, i'd love to hear it. the internet is getting overwhelming to me with toooo much information and i don't know what to believe anymore. i have to sit here at the computer with earplugs in and my neck massager around my neck making the vibrating noise by my ears so i don't hear this jerk downstairs and i have to sleep with it by my head every night but thank god for it. well, that's it. donnie > > > > I'm currently having an issue controlling my episodes of rage due to 4s. > > I'm wondering two things: > > > > 1. Guest guest
I have screamed and raged at my poor husband over the neighbors with the giant basketball games in the street. Also, some new people moved in next door with a heavy metal band. You can hear it inside our house from their (closed house). I went into hysterics when I heard it because it started in the winter when I finally had some relief from the basketball. I wasn't violent but I became an activist, like a secret agent, getting police and the city involved in enforcing the ordainaces. I was very aggressive about it. I became like the villain of the neighborhood who was " against the kids " . Donnie, I can so relate to what you are dealing with! Can you call the police when this happens? > > > > > > I'm currently having an issue controlling my episodes of rage due to 4s. > > > I'm wondering two things: > > > > > > 1. Guest guest
That guy better be careful. That attitude and disturbance will one day get his arse hauled to jail. Or at least evicted, I hope, if the spineless manager decides to do something. There's no excuse for that kind of.... I would use a really potent insult here for that tenant, but there're kids on the list.I hope you find a nice, quiet place, Donnie.
