Hi Everyone,Well, I have some great news, IT’S WORKING!!!! I have been doing the happy happy dance for the last couple of days. I am now down to 2 visits per week, and will be going to 1 visit per week. The doctor wants to see if traction only or adjustment only works. He was so skeptical in the beginning and now he is the one who is getting excited about treatment. He’s become so empathetic, I forget sometimes that I’m the one with the problem! How do I know this is working? Well, Monday night I had to go to the grocery store (Fred Meyer for those of you in my part of the country). I had to take a friend to the pharmacy who had just finished a root canal. As soon as I walked in the front door I realized it was a big mistake. Since I had to keep an eye on her, I couldn’t turn around and leave. The music, the carts, the people, the huge displays, the beeping, the kids, ugh, it was awful. I thought if I can just focus on her, I may be able to get through this. About 5 min later, I realized that I was heading towards an explosion so I quickly pulled out my ear plugs. I couldn’t really put them in tight because I had to listen to my friend and make sure she didn’t tip over. And I can’t really explode at someone who is loopy from pain medicine. We had to wait for the prescription to be filled so we did her shopping. I made it through and it wasn’t until the next morning that I realized that I had not had any physical reaction – at all!! I had instinctively reached for my ear plugs and prepared myself for the worst. This morning I accidentally clinked a bone china cup and although I could feel the sound wave hit my ear, I didn’t have a physical reaction. I also have been avoiding running the dishwasher for the last 3 days because I dread the sound. I forgot to run it while I was out so I ran this evening and it actually sounded quieter than usual. I was sitting nearby, I can’t go to another place to escape the sounds. I was also able to have the TV at what is probably a normal level with no problem. I still lower the volume but I think I can now choose what the volume can be. So, I can say with 100% certainty that the chiropractic treatment has had a very positive effect for me. It isn’t that I don’t hear the sounds, I do, but I don’t have the urge to run someone over with a shopping cart or scream at the top of my lungs. And I’m very happy with that. I think or I hope that as I progress, the hyper focus on the sounds will decrease. My goal is still to be able to sleep without earplugs and wake up feeling rested. My other test will be if I find myself in an audience. Applause hurts terribly. I have started tap dance classes and this is a bit more challenging. If I wear ear plugs I can’t hear when I’m not tapping correctly but the music is so loud that it causes me to be distracted because of the sounds. Too much stimulation triggers my ADD. And if it is the wrong kind of music, I feel the anxiety build up which means I have to walk out immediately. I encourage you to give this a try so that we can draw some conclusions. If nothing else, it has helped me to sleep better and maybe it will help some of you. I know that if I had a bad night, any little thing hurts my hearing. I get overly sensitive beyond the usual and about the only thing I can do is take a nap to reset my system. Hopefully there are some of you on this forum who will work with a chiropractor. I would like to hear and compare results. I’ve been going for about 2 months now. This gives you an idea on when you may start to feel a difference. I haven’t heard from anyone doing acupuncture. I would also like to hear if anyone has seriously pursued that beyond a single visit. I do think this has to do with the nerves that go from the ear canal down the neck to the shoulders. Having this since childhood probably causes anxiety which in turn causes more stress which causes more hyper sensitivity which causes anxiety, etc. Just my thoughts.

This sounds really encouraging , I am so glad it is helping. I am currently having acupuncture - my problem is slightly different as it is mainly hyperacusis and is caused by nerve damage after an accident six years ago. The acupuncture is certainly helping me, the pain caused by the trigger sounds is not nearly as bad as it was. I have also told her about your chiropractic treatment - she is also a physiotherapist and we are going to try adding in some traction. Liz inUKSent from my iPhone

— It sounds like you have hyperacusis more than misophonia—forgive me if I’m wrong. Maybe this is why you are getting such relief from the chiropractor while my daughter just seemed a little better with triggers. Maybe this is the key with hyperacusis—nerves being “pinched” are out of whack and causing sensitivity to all sounds—magnifying them. I’m so happy for you if this is the case. I hope it just keeps getting even better!
