jackie, once again the similarities are really bizarre. when my nada

was doing a lot of meth, she did a lot of meth crafts - like making

her own outfits. this is the one part of my memory that absolutely

makes me laugh out loud because her taste was so unbearably HORRIBLE.

she was dating my friend and in a serious long-term relationship with

him (we all lived together - he was eighteen. this is when i was in

high school) and she felt that in order to fit in with the younger

crowd, well she had to look the part. but i don't know how looking

like a crazed-prostitute with a glue gun made her look younger.

she would wear boostie-a's and glue fake strands of dangly pearls and

sequins onto them, cut out hearts in her thigh-high leather boots and

overlayed them with lace, then she would cut out a giant heart in the

back of an old blazer and overlay it with lace so that it matched her

shoes. not to mention she wore hot pants with this little number. she

also has fake breasts and scabs all over her from picking, so you can

imagine how tacky and awful this looked.

anyway, i was very much a tomboy then and going to the grocery store

when she was in her garb was completely humiliating for me. she tried

to get me to dress the way she wanted me to up until high school. i

had to put my foot down and plus she was a little to into her own

wardrobe (and drugs) back then to care about mine.

but what is it with BPD's having such poor taste? it's really weird.

love, christine.

my nada, in her effort to stay as cheap where us kids are concerned as

possible, made all my clothes and my sisters ( my oldest sister and both

brothers got new clothes, then my other sister started getting new clothes,

but I still had to wear things nada made for me) naturally it was " old

lady " style clothes...even when I was 6 years old..and to try and make it

appealing ( to whom ??) she's put sequins or fringe on it...which in my mind

made it all the more tacky and distasteful...and heaven help me if I ever

complained or said anything bad about it...or even made suggestions to make

it so I'd like it better ( color or print) she'd rage " all I do for you and

you're so ungrateful...I spend my days working on YOUR clothes and this is

all the thanks I get... " etc....I didn't get my first store bought clothes

until I was in high school !! I can't count how many times she stuck me

with pins...and my hems were always below the knees...I was( am) a tomboy

too..and she's spent her life trying to make a " lady " out of me LOL

My nada is very elegant and always dresses very well. She has a flair for

putting things together, still is slim (age 86) and carries herself well. In

her day she was extremely beautiful and always attracted a lot of attention.

Her shopping for me was totally off; her selection (that lasted until after I

married and left home) for me was clothing that was very unflattering for my

body type. Go figure.

It is reassuring to read about everyone's experiences. Blessings, mg

My Nada does that now, buys me huge, unflattering clothes. Whenever she

goes out of town for vacation, she always brings everyone home some sort of

clothing. I always, ALWAYS get mumu's. Without fail... Now, I know I'm not

the

little 17 yo size nothing I used to be, 3 kids will do that to ya, but come

on!! Especially when she knows how hard I worked to lose weight after my

last baby... Ugh. I told her this last time unless she wants to play nice, not

to bring me anything at all. I got jewelry instead. :) It's so wierd, in

high school, she used to buy me the shortest, tightest, sluttiest clothes you

could find. My senior prom dress was so short, you could see right up it.

She thought it was gorgeous, I was embarassed to death. She just can't have

me looking... nice, I suppose.

big. Now, I am a big girl (like I would make a great defensive tackle were I

to play football), not fat just broad. But most of the things that she would

get were practically maternity size.

My nada had a real bug up her arse about shopping -- didn't want to

spend the money, didn't want to be out in public, scared to drive,

etc., etc.

The fact that she had 2 children and unfortunately, children need

clothes from time to time -- she acted so PUT UPON when she had to

take us shopping. And she took us to places where we didn't like

the clothes (mostly) but she liked the prices.

And I'm not saying you can't shop on a budget, but she didn't even

try to make it work -- no enthusiasm whatsoever. She could have

said " What about this? You could put it with that! " She just stood

there while we looked and we didn't like anything there. She

couldn't even take us to a regular department store.

I remember very clearly one time she stormed out of a store because

we wanted a couple of specific things (you know -- wanted something

that was the trend at the time) and she BLEW UP -- cussed a blue

streak while she stormed to the car. Us kids scampering after her.

Gee -- I guess her heart wasn't in it to begin with, ya think?

That about sums up my childhood -- I always felt like a nuisance for

what I'm finding out (now that I'm a mother) are NORMAL childhood

needs!

I think she felt that when we reached some modicum of independence --

like maybe 13 or 14 -- she could just start ignoring us!

Don't get me started on the refrigerator -- there was never enough

food, either. That's another thread.

Gosh what a sight. They must have bizarre tastes because they are

emotionally three years old and you know how toddlers love bright

shiny things. Odd when you describe lace, beads and stuff. I can see

it put together tastefully in a nice outfit but no doubt it was in

aporpriate the way house of BPD puts it together. C

thanks for the compliment. I do have a dry sense of humor. Hey are

you the one who works as an animal technician?

Cristie

jackie, once again the similarities are really bizarre. when my nada

was doing a lot of meth, she did a lot of meth crafts - like making

her own outfits. this is the one part of my memory that absolutely

makes me laugh out loud because her taste was so unbearably HORRIBLE.
