Guest guest
Dear Dr. Chiu. I need some advise please. My wife was on the minocin for about 4 weeks when suddenly she had a terrible flare that attacked her nervous system - all the typical symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis. She had always just shown symptoms of RA before. After hospital time and five 1000mg IV's of SoluMed (methylprednisolone) she has Raynaud's in her right toes all the time, constipation and numbness in her left leg, slight vertigo, insomnia. When should she go back on the Minocin? We are scared that another herxheimer reaction may do permanent nerve/brain damage. (MRI shows bright spots in the Pons at base of the brain). We beleive the Minocin therapy is working well but the toxins from mycoplasma die off is causing autoimmune attacks on her nerves and brain. Please advise if you can help. Thank You! Sincerely, and , Dickinson, TX PS: Her symptoms were morning headache, many migraines in previous days, vertigo, vomiting, double vision, peripheral neuropathy on left side (numbness waist to foot, trouble with urinary and rectal sphincters, extreme fatigue. We are still waiting for the spinal tap results for Multiple Sclerosis. The doctor said it could be a stroke, but he said it's rare for her age (24yrs). This all started 1 hour after taking her first dose of a new blood pressure medicine, Adalat, a calcium channel blocker that relaxes the blood vessel smooth muscle cells. Her blood pressure went from 160/100 to 120/60 very fast, then all these symptoms kicked in. The neurologist is convinced that the Adalat had nothing to do with the attack. Spinal fluid was very high in gamma globulin which indicates strong inflammation. I don't know if the inflammation can cause a stroke. Can sudden BP drop cause a stroke? Following is a response from another lady that had a stroke after 5 wks on minocin. Re: rheumatic please help my wife Hi- I was wondering what your wife's symptoms were that caused her to be hospitalized? I had a stroke 5 weeks after starting minocin. I had also had decadron IM shot the week before the stroke- so we do not which if any caused the stroke. I did have morning headaches prior to the stroke. After getting my BP down i started on doxy but was just fixing to start minocin again until I read your post. Maybe we can help each other. My MRI of brain showed lesions in the base of brain. I wondered if the " stroke " was a herx from minocin attacking mycoplasma. Will wait to hear from you. Carol*

I think the high levels of gamma globulin in the spinal fluid indicate that this may not be RA but perhaps another disease such as lupus. I think the first thing to do is establish a firm diagnosis before initiating treatment of any kind. ------- Regards, Dr Graham Chiu Prospective Internet Observational Study in Arthritis Home Page http://www.compkarori.com/arthritis/ Contribute at http://www.compkarori.com/arthritis/contrib.htm Data Entry at http://www.compkarori.com/cgi-local/piosa.cgi
