Visual trigger? The gum chewing smirk?

Just wanted to thank all of you again for your support and for offering a place

to " vent. "

Just had another thought about the whole gum chewing issue. A lot of us say

just the visual of watching someone chew gum sets us over the edge.

Has anyone else here noticed that some people when they chew gum get an

expression on their face that looks almost like an evil or sly smirk?

It sounds crazy, but my mother in law gets it. (This is the woman whose gum

chewing irritates me so much that I have actually started avoiding her entirely

when she's chewing, and I try to avoid looking her in the face when she's

chewing.)

It also seems like people's personalities change when they chew gum. They take

on the persona of an obnoxious and arrogant or foolish person, don't they?

One time my mother in law stopped by and asked me if I had bought a Christmas

present for my brother in law's new girlfriend. She just had her head poked in

the door when she asked, I had not even seen the gum quite yet. When my mother

in law leaned in, she was cracking her gum and then the sly " gum cracking smirk "

came over her face and she said, " Oh you bought her something? *crack* *chomp*

Whadya get her? " Something about is just seemed to TRASHY to me! She's

normally a very reserved and well mannered lady, but when she chews gum it's

like she's a (forgive me) crass and low class woman.

To make matters worse, I think that she started chewing gum because she's on

many medications that give her a dry mouth. Her doctors may have suggested gum

chewing to help the dry mouth. If this is true then I feel even worse when I

get disgusted by it.

There may be something to that facial expression, I have seen that faceIn so many incarnations that I have formulated a theory although it may sound nuts....Gum chewers I talk to about their chewing say it helps them "focus" or "concentrate" more.  In essence, the repetative chewing motion disconnects the mind from the body, and chewers have an out-of-body experience!  They get caught up in the rhythm of it and block everything else out, including other people. Is it such a surprise to learn that all our personal toys (like mobile phones, iPods, and gaming systems are all designed so that an insular world is created around us....not just while we use them, but all the time.  It's a new attitude-that's the expression I see on faces.  People GIVING up their humanity for "toys".Thank goodness for high tech!  As 4s sufferers, I think we look at

those chewers and see a giant, insurmountable problem that could possibly be tackled before it's too late; before there are generations of people  to whom "manners" mean nothing.  Manifest destiny?I hope I'm still making sense these days, it's hard to tell!Kip From the Mind of Gordon
