No one should feel guilty over something they can't control. You also should not have to subject yourself to something unpleasant just to please people or tradition. If your folks really want to do something for you on your birthdays, they could be a bit more considerate.(hugs)= M-F.> To: Soundsensitivity > Date: Sat, 13 Feb 2010 20:01:34 +0000> Subject: Should I feel guilty about this?> > Well, tomorrow is my 18th birthday, and my parents were going to take me to a nice restaurant. I understand the guilt. I feel it alot, and there have been countless times my

parents have tried to take me out or something similar and it ends up being a

really bad experience. The best thing is to just not go or go another time.

Don't let yourself feel too guilty.

Are your parents able to read the messages in this group? I really think that reading them helps family members (not all but many) to realize the seriousness of this condition. I don't think they would want you to be tortured on your birthday.

Don't feel guilty. Hope you had a good 18th.

It’s natural to feel guilty. I try to use excuses when I can.

Just let them know you’d rather go when they are feeling better. It’s not a lie

and they’ll feel better that you’re thinking of their well-being.

Should I feel guilty about this?

Well, tomorrow is my 18th birthday, and my

parents were going to take me to a nice restaurant. I never go out to dinner

with my family, because of the eating sounds and everything. Except, every year

for my birthday, I always go to Kobe's steakhouse with them. I never really

enjoy myself, but I do it anyway.

Anyway, they made the reservation a few weeks ago, and I didn't think much

about it. But then a few days ago my mom got a cold. (I can't stand the sounds

of sick people... (sniffling, the congested voice, etc). And I'm pretty sure my

dad is getting it too. I didn't really want to go in the first place and now I

REALLY don't want to go to.

So I told them to either cancel the reservation or go without me. They just

canceled it and I feel really guilty now. Should I?

No if someone tries to make you feel that way, tell them it's manipulative to

try to make someone feel bad that can't help it. It's manipulative regardless.

Heh after reading " Emotional Blackmail " and " If You Had Controlling Parents " I

feel like a fine tuned radar for that sort of person now.
