Mold Found In School Over A Year Ago

HOUSTON -- As it turns out, some people in the Fort Bend Independent School

District knew about the problem at First Colony Middle School a year ago and

did nothing.

Students at First Colony Middle School are taking home more than just books.

They are also carrying a note about the indoor air quality at their school.

" It's kind of scary because what I got in the note, I don't want to get sick

and miss school. So it kind of scared me when I read it, " said student,

Harding.

" It's pretty shocking. As a matter of fact, he has a problem with allergies

and there is a problem in the school, and it needs to be resolved, " said

student's uncle, Delgado.

The letter says it has no sign of the fungus, stachybotrys, in the school,

but it had been found before.

An indoor, air-quality report of First Colony Middle School was created in

February 1999. It paints a picture of the school as a so-called " sick

building. " Among the findings last year, the microbiological activity is

expected to be high in this facility, creating conditions ideal upper

respiratory problems.

This information was not reported to parents and teachers before this time.

" We apologize to that. The district should have been doing a better job

communicating with the parents and the staff. Now that we're aware of the

communication that wasn't there, we're going to do a much better job, " said

Fort Bend ISD Spokesperson, May Ann Simpson.

Even though the report was over a year ago, the administration here just

recently found out about it.

Changes have been made at the school and the latest study shows no trace of

the fungus. Fort bend will test all 52 of its campuses over the summer, but

there are a lot of angry teachers saying they should have been told about it

this last year.
