Guest guest
My 5 yr old has been dx with High Functioning Autism (we think AS) and ADHD. He was just prescribed the clonidine patch. The dr said it should help keep him calm and help with hyperness. Has anyone had any experience with this medication. He was previously on concerta but would have terrible meldowns when it wore off at night. (screaming, banging head, crying) thanks.
Guest guest
I have no idea about the clonidine patch. What I can tell you is that my 8 year old HFA boy, also ADHD, did horribly on concerta at 5 because he was actually chewing on the stuff. Now at 8 (when he actually swallows the pill) he does beautifully. In addition to concerta he takes 1 mg a day (half in the morning, half at night) of tenex. It does calm him down some, and the combination works great. > My 5 yr old has been dx with High Functioning Autism (we think AS) > and ADHD. > He was just prescribed the clonidine patch. Guest guest
yes we used it for my son's adhd but found that it was not effective. We also used Tenex which is supposed to do the same, but the results were the same. My son takes Prozac and it has been a miracle for his attention and anxiety. We use Adderall as well. Good luck. We used to go to Dr Epstein at the Marino. I decided to take my son to a psychiatrist and have had great results with medication management
Guest guest
, I have twin girls who are now 5 yrs old. To get them to sleep every night was a 2 to 3 hour deal. And then they would only sleep a few hours before waking up again. Their doctor prescribed cloridine. One in the morning and one at night. This turned out to make them sluggish and sleepy through the day. But one at night 1/2 hour before bed time was the magic ticket. They now fall asleep within 1/2 hour of bed time, they sleep through the night, and don't fall asleep during the day. This was exactly what they needed and we haven't seen any negative side effects. Good Luck ! Bpaolini -- clonidine My 5 yr old has been dx with High Functioning Autism (we think AS) and ADHD.He was just prescribed the clonidine patch. Guest guest
So the pattern of these emails clearly suggests that children all respond differently to medication, be they patch, liquid or pill. I strongly urge folks to remember that. There has never been a specific medication for "autism" per se. Each med was used originally for different purposes. I think we creating potentially dangerous situations when we ask each other how our kids do on certain meds. especially since one child's failure can easily be another child's success. I can't emphasize that enough. Medication treats symptoms...not children!!

Medication treats symptoms...not children!! dear DAC: I respect your opinion but I think it is informative to see if other people have used it and how it has helped or not helped the symptoms. I don't think medicine is the answer or cure but sometimes it helps the emotional health and sometimes physical safety of our children. In my case my child needs something to calm him in order to be safe. He has taken sometimes 3-4hrs to fall asleep and during that time has had crying fits, banging his head - screaming that he can't sleep and everything bothers him. Also to stop him from being so impulsive that he would run away and either get lost or hit by a car. Or when your child can not sit still in school and comes home crying that he always gets in trouble, and everyone hates him. In my case medication was the last resort - not the first solution to try. I feel that it is also very important in my case to include, therapies, (O/T, behavioral, speech) to help and improve symptoms. I would never give my child a medication just because it worked for my friends child but It is important to get as much info especially from other caregivers on their experience whether it be with natural remedies, medications, therapies, etc. and that is why I joined this group.
