I had one patient record an interview. He

is blind and all of our materials needed to be read to him. Since he couldn’t

go back and read anything over again, he wanted to record the interview so he could

reference what was given to him.

We once had a family member pretend to be playing on their personal

laptop, but they were recording the visit by each member of the

transplant team - including the MD's. I don't recall what brought it to

our attention, but a follow up call was made to the potential recipient

and they were asked to refrain from this on future visits.

We don't have a formal policy on this.

You may want to check to see if your facility has a policy that

forbids the use of “hidden devices” to record patient information.

This would be considered a HIPAA violation since patient medical and financial

information is being discussed and can be used for those not present for the

interview to hear.  Not sure if a consent would have to be signed by the

patient or administrative approval would need to be given. I would be very

uncomfortable with this especially if you were unaware, if there were good

intentions why not ask for permission from the start.

He is blind and all of our materials needed to be read to him. Since he couldn’t go back and read anything over again, he wanted to record the interview so he could reference what was given to him. I don’t recall what brought it to our attention, but a follow up call was made to the potential recipient and they were asked to refrain from this on future visits. We don’t have a formal policy on this.
