Guest guest
HI everyone. Thanks for your posts. I thought it was weird that no one replyed the first time, but now know that sometimes that may happen. Well, I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroid, Graves Disease back at the end of November. My dr said I could have been hyper for a while as it did not take long with my 2nd blood works to find out I am now hypo. (which was on 12/10). He prescribed Synthroid at .075 micrograms, I take it once a day, then the 2nd week in February (at about 8 weeks from starting) I go back in for more blood work. My number on 12/10 was 14.2, back at the end of October it was 0.07. These are the only numbers that were given to me....Should there be others I should be concerned about? This is all so new to me and have been doing alot of research on the internet..But still have so many questions. I have a friend who has been through all of this, so that helps. My dr said that within the 1st week of taking the Synthroid I should feel some mild changes (to feeling better) which I would have to disagree with (at least for me) I don't feel any better. In fact the diarrhea has gotten worse!! And to answer some of the other questions... I am also on Lexapro for depression and Buspurone for anxiety. I live in Minnesota. Thanks for listening. Guest guest
If my memory serves me correctly.. Graves is an increase in the activity that continues until the thyroid burns out... someone correct or add to this if you know better than I. Did you receive any treatment after your diagnosis of hyper? Or did it just switch to hypo on it's own? The doc may not be familiar with Hahsi's and just automatically called it Graves due to the hyperactivity.... if you do have Hashi's... You guys jump in on this one... you are going to be cycling for a while.... There are actually three tests that are needed to accurately monitor blood levels when treating thyroid... TSH, T4 and T3. Most docs only test TSH. That test will tell if a person is in an extreme, either hyper or hypo. But as a test to check the accuracy of the dosage it's not worth a whole lot. For that you need the T4 and T3..... See if he took any other tests... and see what the lab ranges are for those tests... Each lab has a different set of values for what is a normal range.... so that range is needed to determine where your value falls. You'll get the hang of this.. and remember, everyone... most often if you haven't gotten a response to a question in 12 to 24 hours PLEASE post it again. Yahoo loves to lose messages.. sometimes, especially during the holidays, messages can backlog and get missed.... No one here is ever ignored... No one will be angry if you post that second time... just don't do it every hour... okay? *wink* It takes 4 to 6 weeks for the T4 (Synthroid) to build up in your body. For many that means not much in the way of change/improvement til then.. Not a hard a fast rule.. some see stuff sooner.. but be prepared. Diarrhea is part of hyper... for some, also a symptom of hypo... Try to watch what you are eating to keep the fiber at a good level... don't go over board.. but make sure that you get some fiber into you to help get things a bit more regulated. I have no data on this.. but when I was hyper during my storm.. my system digested things so quickly and pushed stuff through so fast that the liquid wasn't pulled out while passing through the intestines, and that was the cause of the diarrhea. Both depression and anxiety are symptoms of thyroid disease... once your thyroid meds are on track you may find that the other meds aren't needed anymore. Guest guest
You say you have been doing research for this, so you want to know that you're not actually " crazy " . Confirmation: The only test you had was TSH, which is NOT going to tell even one tenth of the story. You need Free T3 and Free T4 testing. Those are the only things that will tell you what your thyroid is making, during any one given period of time. You said that you have Grave's Disease. Have you had RAI for this, or did your thyroid just play itself out over a period of time? Did he also do antibody testing for Hashimoto's? The two CAN coexist. If you have NOT had RAI, and your lab values are bouncing around like that so often, Hashi's has it's own syndrome concerning this. The 14.2, if I was guessing, is your TSH, and so is the lower figure. Lexapro is an SSRI antidepressant, and those have been found to have an effect on the thyroid hormones.
