I'm soooooo overwhelmed by the info on vitamins for my son. I can't seem to decipher which ones are good, which are the right ones, etc. I've been on the Kirkman website, the Klaire website, and many more. Can someone who has already gone thru this give me some sound advice on which vitamin I should start my son on? He has an appt with a doctor here in Michigan this coming week, but I'd like to get as much info on vitamins before I go. Maybe even get him started on something soon. He is not currently taking anything....I've just discovered your group and bought the CSB book. I never attributed his autism to vaccines, but after much research, I'm pretty convinced that was what did it. I'd just like to know which one you all can recommend that has been tried and works! Thank you! Sonja West

Guest guest
Hi Sonya and welcome! It is daunting at the beginning but it will all begin to make sense so hang in there. I think you can use Dr. JM's book as a guide until you see your DAN! doctor. That doctor will likely do tests to determine exactly what your child needs and tailor his protocol to his exact needs. In the meantime you can start some basic minerals... You can get some Zinc ( Picolinate or Monomethionine are well absorbed usually)to start with. If you happen to find Thorne Picmins in your area, it is a great mineral supplement with both Zinc and Selenium in it. You might also add some Vitamin C and B Vitamins (B6 in the form of P5P is one suggested) but a B complex would work also most likely. You also need to start some Essential Fatty Acids-Omega 3's. There are some of these that are made for children (watch for extra ingredients though like flavorings, food colorings and sugar substitutes that may not be good for our kids) and you might just get some good ole' Cod Liver Oil and start with that. I'd also suggest strongly getting a good Priobiotic and starting that slowly. All of our guts can use a little extra good bacteria and chances are your child may have some gut issues. There are many good brands but since this is near your appt, I'd just get something local that will get you started and then see what your doctor recommends. There are other vitamins/minerals that your child likely needs but with your appt so close, you can likely wait. It is suggested to start each thing alone to make sure of tolerance. And most of all START LOW AND SLOW! Do really low doses and build up. The things I mentioned above can likely be used no matter what DAN! doctor you see so I think it would be things you can continue to use after your appt or for times when you may need some extra supplementation. FYI, we used Kirkman's Super Nu Thera initially before we saw Dr. JM but now I really feel it is better to give separate nutrients initially at least so you can tell what is causing a problem if the child has a negative reaction to something. Just be sure to get brands that do not have lot of additives in them. We use Thorne and a few other brands mainly that Dr. JM mentioned in her book but you may not be able to find those locally. There are usually brands even in smaller community health food stores however that are free of additives so just look around. Your doctor will likely have a preference for brands/etc and so you can wait to order most things after your appointment and testing. Good luck.. I feel that the testing and DAN! protocol is so essential to recovery. My little boy did very well on it and he was able to recover by using the individualized supplements that Dr. McCandless prescribed. Giving a child exactly what they need can only help and I'm so grateful for the testing and the skill of our doctors in knowing what to prescribe. It is proven to be effective and that was important to me. No two children will respond the same but these methods have proven so effective for so many... it's not easy by any means (btw.. also suggested is gluten /casein free diet along with removal of soy, corn and sugar too), but there is a lot of confirmed success with the DAN! protocol. It is a bit overwhelming at first but giving your child exactly what they need and controlling diet and treating the gut are all steps toward getting better... along with chelation if needed. You're on the right track so just hang in there and know it will all fall into place. :)I can recall feeling exactly like you do. I didn't want to waste a day either! ) I'm sure you'll be in good hands with your doctor and they can get you on the right track. Guest guest
Hi Sonja, we've all been there, it's pretty confusing to say the least. My son takes lots of supplements from varies places, but his Multi Vitamin and Mineral come from Brainchild Nutritionals. You can take a look at their website for more information. www.brainchildnutritionals.com We had lots of trouble finding supplements that our son could handle, these worked out very well for us. Now he seems to tolerate anything we throw at him! You might want to wait until you see your DAN! before ordering if you have an appointment this week. The Dr. may have a brand he/she likes too. Once you have your appointment and the Dr. recommends a list of supplements then you could ask here for help for specific items. CSB will help tremendously. Good Luck! Jules > Hi everybody. Guest guest
Mark, I have to say I highly disagree with this. It is difficult, next to impossible to be sure you are getting this clean and clear of metals and toxins. And....I once tried it myself, long ago and it caused horrible gut distress. These children, most of them, have very delicate bowel issues. I appreciate that you want to do naturals, but children, especially those that are so very toxic, need very specific nutrients in specific amounts. There is a difference between trying to improve your health with natural substances and trying to recover a very damaged system. I mean no offense, but you should spend some time with these kids...a long time. They are not easy to recover. And they are very delicate. Just my two cents. Ann ===== To Sonja, If I were you, I would just wait for my appt. and let the dr. direct you on what to begin with. You will need to do testing, get the results back and then, make adjustments by what your individual child needs. They are all alike...and all very different. Good luck with your appt. Guest guest
Are there any studies of using spirulina to treat children on the spectrum? I never attributed his autism to vaccines, but after much research, I'm pretty convinced that was what did it. > > I'd just like to know which one you all can recommend that has been tried and works! > > Thank you! > > Sonja West > > >
Guest guest
Are there any studies of using spirulina to treat children on the spectrum? Is there anywhere that practioners have documented clinical response to spirulina for autistic patients? > Sonja, > > Just go out and buy some pure spirulina........then you do not have to guess......in one swoop you will be giving him the best of everything he needs in terms of vitamins, minerals, trace elements, amino acids, omega threes, and the list goes on..........just start out slow, get your son used to it and if he takes to it you will have found a great treasure of healing energies.....without the appropriate nutritional support detox channels don't exactly work well and without deep nutritional support chelation can be a nightmare. > > > Mark Sircus Ac., OMD > Director International Medical Veritas Association > http://www.detoxchelationclinic.com > http://www.imva.info > > help with vitamins > > > Hi everybody. Guest guest
I would recommend using the the DAN! Clinical Options Manual as your guide. It has specific dosage and indications in it. This information is based on data specific to treating children with autism: http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/ts/exchange- glance/Y01Y5281977Y9847984/002-2362872-3147231 Even the most knowledgable and informaed doctors will not usually have time to get into granular details on each and every supplement. Additionally you will have to judge for yourself and make adjustments based on day-to-day behaviors. You are doing the right thing by seeking knowledge because you will always bear a god deal of the responsibilty for managing your child's supplements. > Hi everybody. I'm soooooo overwhelmed by the info on vitamins for my son. Guest guest
Also, Dr. JM's book has dosages of a lot of things included. It of course has to be individualized for each child and you will find you have to tweek this as you go but it is a good guide on supplements and general dosages also. Good luck! We're all pulling for you! BTW.. I did not read closely enough to realize that you were literally a few days from your appt when I gave you some supplement ideas. I think I'd wait also, although starting any of the things I mentioned in previous post will not hurt and you could likely use them for your child.. or yourself! You can find more on recommended supplements also in CSB and I think it is chapter 6. It will help you even after your doctor gets you started. I read it almost nightly for about a year as we were adding things. It was by my bed forever! Many DAN! physicians do prefer particular brands like we all mentioned so don't spend a lot of $$ with just a few days before your appt. The testing will tell you exactly what you child needs as everyone mentioned also. Good luck and keep us posted. Blessings, www.slatersjourney.blog-city.com > > Hi everybody. No. But those that collect toxins all on their own, should be avoided, at all cost. If that is what you are saying then I would 'almost' have to agree meaning No, you didn't get it. See above. I would go for reverse osmosis water or even distilled water, only pure organic foods, and an absolutely natural leaning house and furnishings. Most do as many of these things as possible. Now if you want to separate spirulina out from all of this and make a case for that alone then I highly and strongly disagree with that for their is no rational reason to do that. Spirulina will come to you purer than almost any other food will. See above. > > > And....I once tried it myself, long ago and it caused horrible gut > distress. Most, know I'm a crohn's patient and am a very good judge of just how these kids guts feel and how they respond. Perhaps I should have been clearer for you. Sorry, I will now. People with G.I. DX's have to be very careful with what they inject. Not eat off of a buffet, unless it has just been set out. Bacteria that would bother no one else, but be horrible for them. Water, has to be very pure....as any bacteria will bother them when it would no one else. I could go on, but perhaps you get the gist of it. We do not have a normal system. Period. We have a damaged immune system. > > > I know of so many people who have horrible gut distress for a hundred different reasons. Well, you need to learn what bothers people with a bowel DX or, not put yourself into the conversation. You trial of it yourself with this result does not say anything about the spirulina alone. Perhaps for someone who is not as damaged as these children. Is 40 years with an immune disorder and cronic bowel problems, one recovered grandchild and one much better to say nothing of the thousands who have passed through my group and other groups who are now " normal " ??? We are doing something right! so its food first...... First...you have to fix their sensory issues and get them TO EAT! you have to remember spirulina is a food its not a vitamin or mineral suppliment though it will suppliment more strongly than anything else. See above. Nature in all her wisdom fiquered this out a long long time ago and put at the very foundation of life, in the single cell plants, the very specific nutrients in specific amounts upon which to build the entire chain of life. Guest guest
Thanks Ann, I couldn't have said it better. You may have just saved a few newbies a lot of confusion. I'm sure Mark you mean well, and of course you are entitled to your opinion, but your statements don't sound very informed. I wish it was that simple, I wish I could give my little guy just one thing everyday that would take care of all of his cellular, nutritional and even spiritual needs instead of opening up so many caps every day. And you know, after two and a half years I still haven't got the darn combo right. You see Mark, it isn't that simple. Sometimes the only way one will understand this is to take a walk in our shoes. Thanks anyways though... Jen > > I have to say I highly disagree with this. > > > > I hope below you are specific with what the disagreement actually > is. Guest guest
You see Mark, it isn't that simple. Sometimes the only way one will understand this is to take a walk in our shoes. Thanks anyways though... Jen, I do not think it simple at all but I do like to start out in simple places. I like solid foundations. I like to know that the foundational pillars are trustworthy. Then when we try to bend the river of things on a biomedical level I think we are in safer territory.I think people get confused about suppliments vs food. No one that I have known have suggested that the kids should stop eating.....I am making a strong statement about what they should eat...thats all really.........but when it comes to something like spirulina and the power it brings to the nutritional table...and to the healing table.....it becomes a very strong statement that has a great bearing on what suppliments are then needed and added. Vitamin C certainly is needed for spirulina has none of that. Selenium and zinc would probably be needed.....magnesium boosted as well through other means.........and perhaps other things as well............certainly spirulina would not replace B12 shots....I could go on... Guest guest
When you wrote " Sorry sorry sorry there is no one on this planet who can work out this with pharmaceutical vitamins and minerals. " it honestly read to me as though you felt recovery could not happen with the DAN! No no no............not what I meant......... DAN! does of course concentrate primarily on nutritional supplements, prescription meds, and then chelation/detox. From your original post to the mom who was asking for advice on vitamin supplementation per the DAN! protocol, it does not seem that you were suggesting the DAN! approach as a first line of treatment. That is what I think most confused me -that you were steering her away from the recommendations of the DAN! protocol in Dr. JM's book rather than helping her to know how to implement it. Again not my intention....just suggesting something simple and powerful to start with.......... I understood that you were suggesting spirulina to her rather than the supplements she had read about -she just wanted ideas on how to get started. Well if she could get her child to eat five or so grams a day of it then for sure many of her needs would be met meaning the list of supplements would be considerably shortend....thats all, but that's a lot. Well we did not chelate. And many children have been recovered without chelation. But it is needed by many for sure... And believe me we would have chelated if it had been indicated but thank goodness Dr. McCandless did other things first before starting chelation. We all know from reading Dr. JM's book, there is much she and others feel is important before chelation is considered-there is more in her book on supplementation, diet, RX than on chelation (though it is covered in great detail also). The supplements and other things like diet etc need to be in place if you are following Dr. JM's protocol before chelation is considered.. so what I've seen very much focuses on supplements just as much as chelating agents. Yes interesting what you say about chelation and I agree totally that when the fundamentals are dealt with correctly the need for chelation is reduced or even eliminated. Again, I'd hang my hat on the treatment protocol that is being used now as a foundation and then add other things to it as needed.. it has proven successful and until something else can show that it is more effective I would always take the current biomedical protocol over anything else. I would be adding and subtracting...........fine tuning....sometimes overhaul.....but certainly would never suggest abandoning the solid basics as presented in Children of Starving Brains. Guest guest
I was just checking to see if you knew about something the rest of the world didn't. I couldn't understand why you would possibly be recommending a known APPETITE SUPPRESSANT to autistic children. Your answer explains everything. It saddens me that you are now opening a clinic and recruiting patients. Sorry I have not been following the mail lately so I am late in getting back to this. It's unbelievable to me what people will say. Yes all food could be considered appetite suppressants....you eat and you are supposed to want to eat less after eating. Spirulina could be included in this since it is a food. When taken before meals, even in high doses, it still will not intefere with regular appetite like other foods will though for some it might make sense to take it after meals. To the moderators or the group in general I really am at a loss what to honestly say to someone who posts meaningless communications with hostility attached. I am glad this person did not sign their name so I do not know who they are. Certainly I do not want to know who they are. And worse to take a natural pure food like spirulina and put it down and use it to put me and my work down....I think we are reaching the limit of something here... Mark Re: help with vitamins I was just checking to see if you knew about something the rest of the world didn't. Guest guest
Yes Jen I agree though I would go with spirulina for those B vitamins now. Though I take spirulina as a supplement it really is not. It can and should be put on the list of foods that we take life long. There is a great and growing problem with regular foods...declining nutirtional content is a great problem..................besides the pesticides and food additives..... Remember spirulina is rich in all the B Vitamins............... Mark RE: Re: help with vitamins Thanks for understanding what I meant Mark. You're right when you say that getting the nutrients one needs from foods is much better than supplementing. Of course it is... isn't that what we all want someday for our kids? You bet. My Dan! is a great believer in that. When we can get a specific mineral or vitamin into my son via his diet, then that's great - we still may have to top it up with supps depending on what testing shows though. One example is Selenium in the form of a brazil nut, I think it was this list I was talking to someone about this just recently. Seems to be the only form of Se that I can get in him without his stims going up. Also, my son desperately needs his B Vitamins, but his gut will not tolerate them. So we make sure he gets them in the food form and we top it up with transdermal cream. I think the wish of every parent on this list is to someday have their child so healthy and recovered that there would no longer be the need for so much supplementation and like most NT kids, they would get most nutrients from food etc.. But unfortunately for my son, and for so many other little soldiers like mine, the path to that 'dream come true' has to start with the necessary supplementation. There's just in most cases no other way to get there.
Guest guest
I think I need to step in here for some clarification. Mark, please feel free to correct me if I am wrong in any of this. In case some of you may not be aware of this, Mark Sircus lives in Brazil and has for many years. He has been primarily a writer and has become intensely interested in the toxicity and illness issue, especially after Buttar invited him to do some writing for him about mercury poisoning in our children. Mark has been working with a brilliant doctor in Russia who is conducting an extensive research project using Spirulina and comparing its efficacy to other nutrients, and I will very much look forward to see what he discovers. Hundreds of thousands of children around the world and particularly in third world countries will never have the benefit of a DAN! doctor to help their autistic children. Not only can they not begin to afford our kind of treatment for autism; they may not have access to our literature and scientific knowledge that we have been accruing over these last few years. NOR would they be able to afford the incredible testing we put our children through for pin-pointing their deficiencies, NOR would they have access to our endless supply of good and tested nutrients that are proving to be so helpful for our children. For this population, it would be wonderful to have a nutrient with many of the benefits we are looking for when we search for the best nutrients after having done tests showing what our body needs. Particularly one that is relatively inexpensive and available and acceptable to these families whereas a slew of vitamins may be very foreign. It is true that Mark may be naive about the incredible gut damage most of our children have; to my knowledge he has not had clinical experience with these kids to know the endless bouts of inflammation, pathogen invasion, etc they endure, and the relentless search for remedies, which we are finding every day. It feels like some of you are hearing him say, forget all your diets and tests and myriads of nutrient remedies, just give them spirulina. It sounds simplistic; that certainly will not fly in those versed in the biomedical approach that is recovering untold numbers of kids now. But I see Mark reaching out to a whole other audience, and one which may be much more open to his kind of help, even to know that nutrition is a help in this devastating disease will be a big step forward for many families, who classically just give the kids the carbs they crave (or worse), put them away in homes where they are tended like hopeless helpless disabled kids, forever unable to toilet train, etc. etc. The stories are horrible and unending. I welcome anyone who wants to help autistic children get better, particularly well-intentioned people who have ideals and will learn quite soon whether his tenets hold any merit. I don't appreciate the hostility on the group members' part; I also don't appreciate Mark's assumption that we should throw away all our tried and true methods that are working well and give any one nutrient, no matter how nutritious it is. I would like to see any and all studies done on this as I require for almost anything I prescribe for our kids. It would be good to have an intelligent diaglogue and share ideas without hostility and without, " This is the best way, " without any real evidence.
