This is ridiculous but I suffer with sound sensitivity and have posted on here

before. I have " Escaped " sound sensitivity temporarily I think! I got a cold

last week and its resulted in me losing most of my hearing!! I have had colds

before over the years but this has never happened before. Its been like this for

the best part of a week now. I have been to the doctors who doesnt think my

problem is ear wax. Its more to do with my eustachian tubes and the pressure in

them because of having a cold. He has given me a nasal spray to help.

So now I cant hear any of my trigger noises and I cant tell you how marvellous

that is!! Trouble is, I am also having difficulty hearing people speak and

having to turn the TV up etc. So that side of its not so good.

But at least I have temporarily lost my sound sensitivity, till I get my hearing

back anyway!!

Shirl's post draws attention yet again to the role of the ear in sound

sensitivity, which, after extensively reviewing the literature and testing ENT

patients myself, I conclude is primarily a disorder of the ear and not the brain

or mind, though it can certainly mess up the mind.

I suspect Shirl has the very common but largely misdiagnosed Meniere

Spectrum Disorder. Its most characteristic but seriously misleading symptom is

a feeling of pressure/fullness/blockage in the head or ears. This is rarely due

to wax, never to a blocked Eustachian tube, so causes great confusion to

patients and doctors. The cause is probably low inner ear pressure from any

cause (excess fluid loss, low CSF pressure, low blood pressure, weight loss,

etc). The commonest variant is vestibular (dizziness, nausea, imbalance, poor

concentration, etc). Deafness is prominent in full blown Meniere's Disease, but

more characteristic auditory symptoms in MSD are diplacusis, audiosensitivity,

tinnitus, palinacusis, etc. A typical audiogram will show normal or even better

than normal pure tone thresholds, directing everyone's attention away from the

ear. There can also be fluctuating cochlear hearing loss, meaning quiet sounds

are no longer heard, but loud sound are still heard at normal levels

(recruitment) or even more intensely (audiosensitivity).

Yes I am enjoying it. Its absolutely great!! The only other thing is visual triggers! There are certain really stupid things that I cannot bear to see! One of them is my husband nipping his nose and sort of pulling the loose skin at the end, up and down! Its one of his many habits and even now, after nearly 20 years of marriage, I cannot bear to see him do that! It drives me crazy! Am I crazy?!! I sometimes wonder...Shirl

Think about it though, with hearing loss, you won't be able to hear ANYTHING. And even though misophonia is horrible to live with, we can make it cool, I mean we can hear things no one else can. There's a bright side to everything. We don't need to let little noises hold us back from living. Hearing loss is like giving up, I say we fight it so it's in OUR control, not its control.

Your positive attitude is commendable but Hearing Loss does NOT mean deafness and misophonia does not give anyone the ability to hear better.

I know misophonia doesn't make us hear better, but it certainly expands our attention and makes us focus more on the problems. So if we bring our focus to something else, sometimes we can forget our misophonia exists. So maybe we can take advantage of that. Even if hearing loss is a problem, sometimes misophonia gives us visual sensitivities. It all depends on attention and I think that is our loop hole to finding solutions.
