Guest guest
Hi Debbie, Yes I have heard of Colloidal Silver but I am not sure of it's effectiveness. I tried a product once that had Colloidal silver in it. It was supposed to be really effective for acne. Well needlesss to say it did not work on me. If you are after natural preservatives I can help you out. Arch do a natural preservative called Biovert. It is based on Glucose. I don't know if anyone in the States sells in smaller quantities but it has be to be refrigerated in transport. I also have a list on minimum amount required to preserve products on approx 30 essential oils. Just remember though some people have allergies to some e.o. If you want the list for the essential oils just let me know. The list comes from a cosmetic chemist newsletter I subscribe to. Jacine Colloidal Silver as a Preservative in Lotions?????? Has anyone ever heard of using colloidal silver as a preservative in lotions or creams? I found a company using this as a (natural) preservative in their lotions and was curious if anyone has heard of this. Thanks, Debbie
Guest guest
Hi Debbie - I would be interested in knowing where you found the Biovert and also in the list of 30 essential oils if you don't mind. I can think of a few, but I'm not sure of amounts (percentage) needed to preserve a product. One wonders if the Biovert has to be refrigerated in transport how it preserves our products so they don't have to be refrigerated. I'm assuming Arch has a website - I'll take a look. Have you used the essential oils to preserve a product successfully? Thanks. Ann annrn@...
Guest guest
Hi Anne, Sorry for the hold up I have been flat out. Essential Oils - This was taken from a Cosmetic Article by Nick Morante in Oct 3, 2006. I have forgotten where I got it from I printed it off at the time and just filed it. Below is the list of Essential Oils and the minimum amount required to preserve a formula. A dripolator in a bottle of essential oil usually gives 1ml for every 15 drops. So maybe use this as a guide. Thyme 0.07% Origanum 0.100% Sweet Orange 0.120% Rosemary 0.43% Cumin 0.45% Neroli 0.475% Lemongrass 0.160% Chinese Cinnamon 0.170% Rose 0.180% Clove 0.200 Eucalyptus 0.225% Peppermint 0.250% Rose Geranium 0.250% Orris 0.380% Cinnamon 0.400% Wild Thyme 0.400% Anise 0.420% Birch 0.480% Lavender 0.5% Balm 0.52% Ylang Ylang 0.560% Juniper 0.6% Sweet Fennel 0.64% Garlic 0.65% Lemon 0.7% Cajeput 0.720% Sassafras 0.750% Heliotrope 0.8% Fir, Pine 0.86% Parsley 0.88% Violet 0.9% Just remember that not all essential oils are good. There are contraindications for Epilepsy, High Blood Pressure and Pregnancy. Have a great Christmas Jacine Greenwood Managing Director Orogeny Pty Ltd RE: Colloidal Silver as a Preservative in Lotions?????? Guest guest
Do you mind my asking a few questions? Have you challenge tested these? I would imagine these would add a fair amount of scent to the products that you wouldn't be able to " cover up " with other EOs or FOs. Have you had any problems with skin irritations? Usually whenever EOs are used as preservatives, the levels needed to properly preserve can potentially irritate the skin. I respect trying to go completely natural with preservatives, but usually have found that the side effects aren't usually worth it. > > Hi Anne, > > Sorry for the hold up I have been flat out. > > Essential Oils - This was taken from a Cosmetic Article by Nick > Morante in Oct 3, 2006.
