Guest guest
Hi Robin, Wow, that really all depends on the individual. I myself do not know the answer to what the medications were they used on my back. I know for my arm it was a Stellate Ganglion (sp) block. It is a needle inserted into the neck, and it does not require an IV or medication before hand. The blocks for the lower extremity were done in the back also. This type of block requires an IV and meds. before hand. As far as the longevity of the blocks, again my blocks did not work, but everyone is different. The others on the list may be able to help more. Is this for you? How long ago was the rsd diagnosed? Guest guest
Hi Margot: The blocks thar I have had (18)wre done with marcaine. Under a floroscope the Dr will try to find the right ganglian nerve roots. When found he bathes them in the marcaine. At one point I had a port-a-cath.A epidural catheter which was tunnled under the skin and accessed thruogh a 90 degree needle port under the skin in my side .This was then hooked up to a pump and gave me a precise dose constantly.(ha ha ha ha ) The catheter punched a hole through the dura and I was infusing intra-thecialy(straight into ceberal spinal fluid). My homehealth care nurse saved my life as I was almost out and right around the corner from menigitis. The theory behind the blocks as i understand it is like this. They are trying to put the affected area to sleep (hit a re-set button). Then when it wakes the sympathetic system goes back to normal.Short of that the blocks are used for extreme pain relief and to slow the progression of the disease.I never had a block last more than 10 hrs. They were shooting for72.From here I went on to dorsal collum stimulators (another story ). For some they are a blessing for me they did nothing. Kinda like swimming with no lifeguard the water can be deep and cold swim at your own risk Have a good rest PJ - rsd Nerve Blocks What actually ARE nerve blocks and what drug is injected .....where? I am finaly free enough to spend a little time on the site you recommend Deb and of course I have read about nerve blocks. My Orthapedic Surgeon was going to inject Novacaine into my ankle till I said `HOLD IT!!! I am allergic to that stuff! " so he did not do it. Was that a nerve block he was going to do do you think? Guest guest
PJ, I didn't have much luck with the blocks either. After I was diagnosed I went through a series of 4 and then a catherdra with daily injections. I seemed to go into remission and the doctor thought I was " cured. " I then had to start therapy for my knee which was operated on a month or so before. Ouch!! I did okay for a few months and then the pain started coming back. I was going for a block once a week. More catherdras and even had one with a pump at home and a visiting nurse. The darn thing numbed me from the waist down. I was a mess. More blocks and spreading. I have to wonder if all the blocks I had, at least 30, caused the spreading. I know it works for some and it initially did for me but no longer. I hated them. Maybe twice they got the needles in the right place on the first try. Guest guest
Tracey: I think the thing that the Dr's don't or won't admit is that the entire system is involved and they have yet to be able to address the entire system. the blocks are a stop gap fix and a crap shoot for results. I also went numb the the pump, the things that we do in the search for pain relief.Guinea pigs are what we are and will contine to be until they find an effective treatment.Hope you have a good day! This is what I have been told can exacerbate the whole thing! Nerve blocks are done either in your back or neck. I don't know about a site, but I do know that they have some info on it in the Rsds.org site. I have to go to my sons confirmation right now but, if you still can't find anything, please email me privately. I know I have it somewhere. I hope to talk to you all at least on Monday, maybe Sunday night. Hugs, Deb
Guest guest
PJ, Can't agree with you more. Had a thought while reading your message and looking up at the kid's hamster in his cage. Let's hope that since we're being the guinea pigs, they don't lock us up in a cage with a wheel to run on!!!!! Guest guest
It can't happen because of my severe allergy to it, so have no fear. Makes feel a little nervous as I now wonder what he was actually trying to do by injecting novacaine or however you spell it, into my ankle!
