Guest guest
Kathy (and anyone else who may be having this problem): I'm just wondering how you're treating your sinus headaches. I've had horrible sinus pain/pressure (no major congestion though, which seems odd) for the past couple of weeks. My mother has had the same thing for almost a month. Now, my husband has been in pain lately too. UGH. I've also been feeling nauseus on and off and a lot more pain (flare) for both fibro and VV. You? I've been using Advil Cold & Sinus - and it helps a tiny bit. We also have the humidifier going, but that doesn't seem to do much. It's been very cold here in Minnesota - which doesn't help. Any advice is appreciated! Warmly, Heidi mailto:dwalsh@...
Guest guest
I think maybe I can help. First, drink tons of water. Second, use 5 sprays, five times a day of a saline nasal spray. My ENT Dr. says " drainage is your friend. " I would stay away from anything containing an antihistamine. That only dries you up. I use Sudafed. There are plenty of herbs to help too. Long showers, humidify your house and keep that nose draining. Guest guest
Dear Heidi, I decided to respond to the list because others may be interested in this, too. About 11 days ago, I developed a horrible sinus headache/pressure...pain around the top of my eyes and brows, bridge of my nose, either side of my temples, in my teeth, etc. After about 3 days of almost constant pain, I consulted my doctor's office who suggested Tylenol for Sinus. This did help some. Anyway, 11 days later, my headaches have subsided quite a bit, but now I have a full-blown cold....coughing, congestion, etc! I know if it is caused by a virus that antibiotics won't help and obviously I'm not in too much of a hurry to take them because of my VV. The doctor's office today suggested I take Robitusin DM. If my cough isn't better by tomorrow afternoon, I am suppose to come in. Anyway, at least where I am (California), there is a terrific cold/flu going around. The nurse told me " it's a kick-ass virus " that is particularly vicious. Evidently, for many people one of the first signs is tremendous sinus headache/pain. In addition to the Robitusin for my cough, she suggested running a steamy hot shower in the bathroom and sitting in there for 20 minutes before bedtime. (You don't have to actually be in the shower). Also, she said a vaporizer may help. Last week, I heated a large pot of water on the stove, made a tent with my towel, and held my face about 15 inches from the steamy water. That helped! Hope you feel better!!! Kathy

Guest guest
Heidi: I have read that sinus is, or CAN be, a part of this syndrome of IC, VV, FMS, CFS, IBS, etc.,etc., as they are also mucous membranes. I don't KNOW, of course..but have read it more than once.. I have had BAD headaches since I was in my 20s, have had brain waves, spinal taps and so on to try to find a reason but I don't seem to have to HAVE any reasons for anything!! Headaches hae been part of everyday living for me for ages but I can't take so many things, Advil is among them as I can't take ANY NSAIDs since I've had an ucler & now have Gastritis. I can't take ANY pain pills as they a re ALL constipating & you have probably read what a problem that hasabeen (surgery3 xxs) for me for some l4 years since the last surgery w hich was cuased by antidepressants. I now have a prolapse and BUNCH of hemorrhoids so ANYTHING that further constipates is OUT, OUT, OUT! I would rather put up with pain as bad as it can GET, than have that any worse than it IS all the time and THAT takes forever to let UP a bit..despite creams, hot baths, coritsone foam and so on. That is why I panic when I get flares as I have NOWHERE to GO.!!! I have had 2 sinus surgeries in the last 3 years and am told I may need another but mine is NOT bacteria as most are..but fungus. Dark green chucks fall down in the back of my throat..or did..so I have had a LOTof endoscopic tratments, MRIs, washing out from time to time, lots of nose drops & sprays and pills..and occasionally, antibiotics but my ENT doc tries NOT to give them to me, knowing I have " other " problems. He also deosn't want me to take antidecongestants. The gist of this is, I don't KNOW (chuckle)..about the sinus headaches. Those I've had the last few months are a bit different in that the top of my had feels like it is going to blow up and the temples throb like crazy and I developed pretty high blood pressure which is why I was in ER about 3 wks ago for a heart check up, or posible stroke, as I LIVE with heaches and have for years and take 6 to 8 Ex STr Tylenol a day all the time which is the ONLY pain thing I CAN take and THAT is hard on the liver or kidneys. We used to have a Happy Time about 5:00 p.m. for 30 some years, and now that is out, too as that plus Tylenol is bad news. Thee is an item on the shelves called Sea something which reallly is only distilled water & sea salt..saline, really, which is good for ANY sinus problem as it dilutes the mucous and also there is Guifenesin which is also used for FMS..as YOU no doubt know. Hot packs..a folded washcloth wrung out with hot water, held over the forehead gives relief but that's OLD news. I have fungus spots on my lungs also and have devloped ASthma these past 3 years or so. I had neither that or sinus until then but my Internist says living in the " Missouri Valley " is reason enough and so many living in these parts DO. I hope you & you husband get rid of the problem...all we NEED is MORE..I keep telling myself!! Hugs, lorane

Guest guest
Kathy....I was going to reply the same advice to Heidi...about the tent being placed over your head & breathing in the vapors from a pot of hot water. Also, the Tylenol sinus. My daughter has suffered with sinus problems for years. If she can catch it before the sinuses actually become infected, she can avoid using an antiboditic. The first sign is the pressure/pain in her forehead & eyes. She has used nearly every otc sinus medication there is & found the Tylenol sinus to be the best. Also, breathing in the vapors from hot water, hot showers, & someone elses advice to drink lots of water. Hope this helps Heidi....take care....Diane

Guest guest
One more suggestion for the sinus pain. Try Afrin spray (oxymetazoline hydrochloride .05%). You can find generics at places like Dollar General or Walmart fairly cheaply. Use it twice a day for 3 days and then don't use it for 3 days. You will be amazed at how much drainage you have when it opens everything up! But don't use it longer than 3 days at a stretch or you'll get rebound. Good luck, I take allergy shots each week because mine are so bad! -Kitty
Guest guest
I don't KNOW if I should jump in on this Afrin thing but, it is " on the list " , I DO have sinus, big time........ have had two surgeries the last 3 years and have FUNGUS, not bacteria, so IT is bad news and the worst to cure or help. I had been to several top Otolarygoloists and had all kinds of " treaments " & surgery and then went to a top one to hear a lecture on NEW ways to treat sinus. During it, he mentioned that a man had come to him in BAD shape & had been using Afrin and he had to tell him that he could do NOTHING to help him and he said WHY but I don't remember as I hadn't USED it then. Since, on very rare occasions and only ONCE theen, I have. But, I don't have the usual nasal stopped up thing but it is only on one side of my nose and THAT gets stopped up, often at night. I blow & blow and nothing much happens so I have to go and have it flushed out or another endoscope which is most annoying as I THOUGHT after surgery, I'd be thru w/that. Since, I read sometimes that sinus is also a part of this VV, FMS, IBS, n'stuff as it also is a mucous membrane problem..I don't KNOW ..just have read it. I also acquired Asthma at age 80, along with Sinus but live in Omaha & docs here say the " Missouri valley " is a prime spot for sinus things. I hate it here, ANYWAY..used to live in Tucson and the winters here are horrrible..especillay when you KNOW of nice, warm, sunny, places to live!!! Hope the sinus gal the best ... LHend12826@...
