Hi Kathy!

Nystatin is only for the gastrointestinal tract. It will not reach the vagina

unless directly applied there, and is used to clear the bowel of yeast.

Diflucan 100mgs/day, Nizoral 200 mgs/day, Sporonax 200 mgs/day or Lamisil

250mgs/day (standard doses) are all systemic and will be absorbed throughout

your entire system. Various anti-fungals have been used by all of us yeast

suffers with varied results! For me, the Nizoral and now the Lamisil has been

the most effective. Diflucan and Sporonax weren't even close as far as

ridding me of the yeast. But, Diflucan and Sporonax are the most recommended

anti-fungals for gynecological yeast problems. I think Carla has found the

Diflucan the best for her, and Robin the Nizoral. It really is hard to give

you advice as to which one, other than trial and error. Also, is there any

reason you think this is yeast? Were you on bc pills, are your flare-ups more

towards the end of your cycle? Were you on antibiotics or cortisones or

accutane? Or perhaps this all started for you with yeast?? Even if you don't

culture these are several indications that yeast is most likely the culprit.

Also, honestly, 1 month of oral anti-fungals might not be long enough,

especially if you have had vv for a prolonged period of time. For me it's

taken 6 months of almost daily anti-fungal treatment to keep me 95% pain free

for the most part. I still cannot tolerate jeans for more than a couple hours

at a time...but if I wear loose clothing I am pretty much pain free! I find I

cannot go without daily treatment though....the symptoms start creeping back

very quickly. Anyway, Kathy....I know you will get more replies from the other

women here.....they'll help you too! Warmly, : )

Kathy,

I've had lots of problems with yeast over the past 8 months and the

treatment that worked best for me was Diflucan 2 X week for four weeks,

then once a week for four weeks and then every two weeks. I did great

until I tried to cut down to every two weeks, but this treatment did work

better than anything else. My doc also recommended Terazol cream as one

that is the least irritating. I had some problems with burning when I used

it, but you may want to look into it anyway. Good Luck!

Hi Kathleen!

I too am from Canada(Windsor, Ontario), and also have no drug insurance, so I

can give you accurate drug costs......

Diflucan - $106.00 for 6/150 mg capsules

Sporonax - $175.00 for 30/100 mg

Nizoral - $100 for 40

Lamisil - $120.00 for 21/250 mg tabs

The Lamisil and the Nizoral are the cheapest, and the most effective for

me...I've tried them all! I am currently on the Lamisil. Side effects are

usually stomach and gastrointestinal upset.....rarely liver irritation. You

need to have your liver function tested every two weeks just to be on the safe

side. I have never had a problem with liver function. The Nizoral has more

side effects though, and I had a severe adrenal supression with it....(that

was not fun)...so I can no longer take it. Apparently that side effect is

very rare too! Hope this helps you, and feel free to e mail me if I can help

you at all with canadian information, doc's etc!! Warmly, : )

kathleen,

I am from the U.S. and I am not sure if things are the same there. All the

doctors here get free samples of drugs from their pharmacy representatives.

Alot of times they will give them to you to try if you ask them. This helps

when you just want to try a drug to see if it works because they are very

expensive.

Dear Kathy:

My gyne prescribed Diflucan 150mgs. once a week for 6 weeks and nystatin cream

twice a day. I have taken 4 doses of the Diflucan with no results and gave up

on the nystatin as I saw no improvement. I also was given Amitryptiline 10

mgs. nightly but was switched to Pamelor because the Amitryptiline made me so

sleepy I couldn't get up in the morning and walked around in a fog all day.

I'm sorry to say I haven't seen any positive results yet. I hope you have

better luck. (I should add that like you all my cultures came back negative

for yeast.)

Best wishes..

Barb

HI Kathy,

I have used long-term Diflucan with GREAT SUCCESS! The initial dose was

either 150/200mg. the first day...then 100 mg. a day for six weeks.

I highly recommend you send for Dr. Crandall's information at

http://home1.gte.net/ycs/

Make sure you type the number 1 and not the lower case letter L...

I brought this information to my Dr. and then, only then...did he consider

this therapy regime. Dr. Crandall talks about deep tissue burrowing type

yeasts, (there are 100's of different kinds of yeast species) that go beneath

the skin's surface..and can't be detected by a swab culture. I think a lot of

us out there who have suffered with yeast in the past..and have VV..suffer

from this syndrome.

I am currently taking 50 mgs. a day...and have been for the past month or so.

I go for liver function tests every two weeks and have been fine every time.

I hope to try taking the Diflucan every other day soon. I need to clean up my

diet...which will be tough with the holiday's and all...In the past...as soon

as I go more than two days..the symptoms start returning. I believe in my

case..it is due to the fact that my immune system is down...and has been ever

since I developed Grave's Disease and high blood pressure, (at age 32!!)

As long as you keep up with the bloodwork..it is fairly safe to use long-

term. Only you and your Dr. can make that decision...but, let me tell you..If

you have ANY history of yeast...I would definitely look into this. It's the

best $20.00 I've EVER spent on this whole VV mess!!! If I hadn't been my own

advocate and gotten online..I'd still be a raw, bleeding and rotten mess!

Good luck and keep us posted!

If I can answer any more questions...please feel free to write!

Hugs!

Carla

I want to thank all of you who responded to my help message regarding nystatin

and diflucan. I really appreciate it so much. I wanted to get as much info

as possible so I can discuss this with my nurse practitioner. She is usually

receptive to my ideas since she isn't all that familiar with VV. We are both

getting educated. If I could have foreseen a year ago what I would be doing

today with all this, I wouldn't have believed it. As I told her last week,

this is not all in my head. I am not a hypochondriac (as I think some of my

family thinks, except for my husband and daughter), I don't even like going to

the doctor's (I hadn't gone for almost three years until I got this; not a

good idea since I believe in yearly check-ups!). Anyway, forgive me for going

on and on....thanks again for your help!

Hi Carlotta and others interested in Diflucan....

Taking Diflucan once a week..does not cover you enough for an entire seven

days. Diflucan stays in your system 3-5 days...so this is why you may not

have enough in your system...especially if you think you may be suffering from

yeast/systemic yeast.

I recommend that you get either the Yeast Connection and The Woman, by Dr.

Crook, (gotta love his name) or The Yeast Syndrome, by Trowbridge.

These books will explain to you more on the subject...and also...Dr.

Crandall's info is worth the $20.00 investment...her website is

http://home1.gte.net/ycs

You can gather up all the info you can get...and then approach your dr (s)

with it. That's what I did. So many Dr's know SO little about yeast...I

found I am MUCH more knowledgeable than ANY Dr. I've seen to date on yeast and

VV!

Good luck!

Hugs,

Carla

Hi Carlotta, I'm not Carla, but since I've had this exact same thing

happen to me I thought I'd put my 2 cents worth in. I had this happen on

Nystatin, Diflucan, and Nizoral. The doctor told me that the yeast can

mutate and become immune to the antifungal after a while. My yeast

actually changed shape in the 5 years that my doctor treated me. The

antifungal that finally cleared up my yeast was Lamisil. Many believe

that the colon is the source of the yeast and that we re-infect our

vaginas because of their close proximity to the rectal area (also when we

wipe ourselves). Lamisil is the only antifungal that is supposed to

reach the lower intestinal tract. Research has indicated that 30% of it

reaches the lower GI, and it therefore has a greater chance of killing

the yeast. Also, I was on the Lamisil for quite a while, and that along

with a high protein and really low carb/no sugar diet finally got rid of

my yeast.
