Guest guest
Hello: I'm new to the group, and have a question about target pH of lotions and hair products. As I try to learn by analyzing and testing some sample formulations from various web sites, I have found a number of formulations where the oil phase has a pH of 5-6. The water phase called for a gram of Citric Acid (presumably an [anti-]chelating agent], which would have pushed my pH further down. I know that skin buffers well, but I found that this mildly acidic lotion stung slightly on any scratches or cuts. Can someone tell me what pH I should be aiming for to avoid this irritation (I presume around 7), or whether there are non-aciding anti-chelating agents I should instead consider? Also, if neutralizing is an option, is Baking Soda acceptable, or do I want TEA or another base (CP soap?) instead? Thanks much, and Happy New Year, /m
