This comment on misophonia (which uses a cute malapropism, " misoPHOBIA " ) makes

it sound as though it is an easy condition to treat. Anyone else think Marla

Deibler of Cherry Hill, NJ, who wrote the note, is a quack? It sounds to me like

she means well but hasn't a clue.

I am a clinical psychologist who specializes in the treatment of OCD and I have

seen cases of misophobia. I find that it can be successfully treatment with

exposure therapy. For example, I saw a case like this that was so significant

that the patient couldn't eat at all in the presence of others or sit with

friends in the school cafeteria. She had been in treatment for OCD, but this

seemed to be a related, but distinct problem. We approached it using exposure

therapy. I had her start by watching You Tube videos of people eating loudly and

sloppily. Then, we had a session while both chewing gum. We proceeded to slowly

have her watch others eat in close proximity and then to sit with them at a

meal. Eventually, she went to a hot dog eating contest (her idea) and she is now

able to tolerate others eating around her and is able to eat meals with others.

She eventually habituated and it bothers her very little now.
