Guest guest
Hi Sally It's just experience with the Urtica. I find with many people that the eczema flares when I introduce Urtica and then improves magnificently, then flares again each time I increase the Urtica. and I do use arctium a lot as well, but more with acne than eczema. and use Phytolacca with both when appropriate, but following the same general principles. mxx nne Last MNIMH Medical Herbalist. Guest guest
Hi nne isn't that odd! wonder what's going on there?....... Only cases of eczema I've had a problem with were people who wouldn't change their diet (I tell them all to cut out cow derived casein - cheese, milk, processed foods with milk in) , or their alcohol intake, Do you have cases that flared up where you put it in the initial mix? or do you never do this? (I can't wait for the case history collation project....... maybe we can check an even wider range of experiences and observations,............any just one person, however knowledgeable and experienced does run the risk of misinterpreting their observations , ) About ten years ago, I regretted the fact that I hadn't studied epidemiology, as there were so many questions I couldn't answer with anything approaching certainty. Now we have the digital revolution, the upside is any herbalist can be their own epidemiologist, I hopefully await exponential growth of understanding! ;-) I agree about arctium and acne, that's where I was going to use it in fact..... , And phytolacca is also creeping back into my prescribing... (weren't we trained well!..........) Sally > Hi Sally > It's just experience with the Urtica. Guest guest
The problem with urtica causing a flare may be the patient. Urtica is dry in the third degree and hot in the fourth degree so if the patient has a hot and dry constitution urtica will exacerbate the condition. Guest guest
That's really interesting. Not having any energetics training, I always assumed urtica was cool as its so often used in calming hot conditions! Do you have any sources for the energetic classifications you use? Thanks, g. Guest guest
A manuscript that was written in Irish in 1415 and is for the most part a transcript of the Antidotary Nikolai that was written between 1070 and 1090. The latter is purpoted to be be a follow on from Dioscorides but more then likely Galen as Dioscoride had a much wider system of energetic classification then Galen. Graham Tobyn mentions that nettle is hot and dry in the third degree but either way nettle is very heating and drying Hope this helps ri Kingston RE: help please > > Dear all, > I was just wondering if I could have some advice please. Guest guest
When you think that the Romans used fresh Nettle to stimulate the flow of blood to the surface to help with arthritic conditions brought on, in part, by our cool damp climate, it makes sense that the energetics of the plant would be heating and drying. Guest guest
So can this effect be countered by combining it with a cooling mucilage, say plantago? I use this LOADS in eczema and psoriasis. (especially psoriasis- they are hot hot hot!) Guest guest
Could I add to ri’s statement: “The problem with urtica causing a flare may be the patient. Urtica is dry in the third degree and hot in the fourth degree so if the patient has a hot and dry constitution urtica will exacerbate the condition” … in large doses and potentially cure in small doses. If the plant is a similar to the patient’s condition, then small doses are needed otherwise aggravation occurs. Best wishes Craig No virus found in this incoming message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Guest guest
Yes, a plant like nettle should be put with a cooling herb unless you need its full potency. Also remember that alcohol/ethanol is very heating so an alcohol tincture will add to the heat in the nettle. ri Kingston. Guest guest
and the answer is - I can't remember. I certainly haven't used Urtica in the first prescription for many a long year. but it often makes all the difference in the end. nne Last MNIMH Medical Herbalist. Guest guest
Shu di huang - cooked Rehmannia: sweet and slightly warm; affects Kidney/Liver/Heart meridians. Quite heavy and damp so can be difficult to digest. Primarily used for tonifying the blood and for tonifying Kidney Yin. I quite often use this in a formula for menopausal women with night sweats, premature greying of the hair - thin nervy types, not for overweight slow ladies! Sheng di huang is raw Rehmannia; it affetcs the same meridians but is bitter and cold as well as sweet. Primary function would be to cool and nourish; for use where there is heat in the blood, red tongue, extreme thirst. Tierra says that raw Rehmannia is used to stimulate new growth of flesh, muscle and bone as well as normalising blood sugar levels. Look at his book 'Chinese Traditional Herbal Medicine vol 2' for details. Boys URHP RE: help please >> >> Dear all, >> I was just wondering if I could have some advice please.
