ABC News 20/20 is currently filming a story about misophonia, scheduled to air

in May 2012. I've had the opportunity to be in touch with many people who are

suffering from this condition – all of whom have been incredibly generous with

their time and insights. For several months, we have been working to achieve a

comprehensive understanding of misophonia.

The piece will include interviews with Dr. Marsha and with several

" misophonics " who describe their daily struggles, their efforts to find doctors

who understand their condition, and their hope for a cure. I know that there

are a wide range of people who are dealing with misophonia – men and women of

varying ages. In order to accurately reflect the scope and severity of the

problem, we are hoping to acquire video diaries from misophonics that illustrate

the everyday struggles of living with this condition.

The video diaries can include a description of the trigger noises that most

impact you, the coping mechanisms you use, and most importantly, your reaction

to trigger sounds – from clenched fists to verbal responses to physical rage.

The fact that everyday noises like chewing or sniffling can elicit strong

reactions is one that many people simply do not understand, and a visual

representation would help convey that this is not simply a matter of " disliking

a sound " – but rather an uncontrollable and strong reaction. We hope video of

these reactions to triggers can offer a more full understanding of what people

are experiencing.

As a video diary may be difficult to shoot in some circumstances, footage could

also be taken by a friend or family member.

We know that misophonia can be a very private condition. If you have privacy

concerns please let me know and we can discuss options for protecting your

identity in terms of your name and location – and in some cases faces can be

blurred. We also ask that any filming of other people not be done

surreptitiously; cameras should be in full view.
