April,

I am sorry for your loss. I have recently lost my dog of 13 years. I had to put

Streak, my 13 year old Lab/Collie mix, down on May 11th this year. That was 2

days before my 29th Birthday and the week of my 20th anniversary of when I

started training dogs. Streak was the last dog I showed. It about killed me

inside that I had to make that decision. I am just glad my brother was with me.

Streak was meant to be my brother's, Bob, dog. We buried him near his favorite

area on our Farm.

My service dog, Coco, took Streak's death very hard. As Coco is dealing with her

own rare arthritic disease(for her breeding it is rare) in the lumbar region of

her spine. The supplements I have her on now and the NSAID she is on is helping

her. Also we had to change her dog food because she was gaining weight

uncontrollably on Iams Lamb and Rice for some reason we are not sure of. Now she

is on a Hill's Prescription Diet for Weight Loss and she is doing very well on

it. She stopped gaining weight and is now losing on average a pound per week.

Dogs are part of our family, and when we lose one it is like losing one's best

friend. I only had a couple of days to grieve. I was forced to move on. Coco

needed my help and I had to start looking for a puppy to adopt so I can start

training it to be my next Service Dog. If Coco can lose the weight and depending

on how her disease progresses we are hoping she will be able to work for 2 more

years. When Coco does retire she will remain as my pet and she will still work

as a Therapy dog and I will still use her in certain Presentations.

April take care and I will be praying for you and I am sorry for your loss.

Take Care,

Fayette, OH
