Don't go, save your sanity. Unless they're compensating you for a plane ticket, your stay, your time (since your husband wouldn't get paid) and perhaps childcare it doesn't sound worth it for your overall relationship and mental health from my untrained, opinion.

Look at the list of Minuses:1. Anxiety of flying (Mental Health)2. Anxiety of Mom (Mental Health)3. Husband needs to work but show wants him (Money, Mental Health)4. Someone needs to watch the kids (Money? Mental Health [Anxiety?])

Pluses:1. May get some resources and insight from Dr. Phil about how to cope with disorder he possibly has no experience with as opposed to information you're already getting from this list2, Additional national recognition of the disorder if/when segment gets aired

Why not see if anyone else closer to CA without so many responsibilities, anxieties and challenges who suffers from Misophonia might be able to go in your stead? Don't feel that just because you got called, the weight is all on your shoulders to be the one who goes on the show. Take care of YOU first.

I wrote a letter a while ago about just learning about my condition with Misophonia. At the time I had just learned that it was an actual disorder and was asking for help. Since I have written the letter all of the information has come out nationally and in this group.

Well, tonight I received a call from someone from the show. The woman asked me a bunch of questions about the disorder and about my life dealing with it. She proceeds to tell me that they are taping a show next week about unusual disorders and would like me to come for a taping. She said that it would be talking to Dr Phil about coping and hopefully resources he can provide for me.

I am so torn on whether or not to do this! She wants my husband to come with me because he is the one who lives with me and he is also my biggest fear of losing from this disorder. The problem is also that my husband is a contractor with his job and if he doesn't work, he doesn't get paid. We would need to fly to CA for three days (We live in PA). We also have three small children and would have to find someone to watch them while we are gone. My mother offered to go with me but I don't know if I can spend three days that far away with her. I love her but she is a huge trigger for me! Plus the anxiety of flying on a plane but I'm not even going to get into that right now.

Any advise?

Why can't the show arrange for you to be at home - with some sort of

videolink hookup?

I'd think most people would be happy to have a free trip to CA and it

might make more of an impression on the people doing the show that this

condition would interfere with your coming out there.

Well, you didn't mention anything about actually Wanting to do the show. Do you

want to do it, or do you just feel you Should do it? This is the kind of thing

I run into myself. It doesn't sound like you really want to jump through the

hoops. Is there anyone from CA here who could participate instead? Also, what

other kind of " unusual disorders " are they referring to? I don't watch the

show, but I'm always suspicious of the media and how they present things. If

you are really torn, I'd at least try to get more information about what else

they will be discussing, as well as how they plan to present it.

He did the I "unusual disorder" show earlier this year and a woman with Misophonia is was on. We were all so offended cuz he told her she had anxiety and to listen to calming music. Only do it if u really want to. Trust me on that one. And vett what he's going to claim u have. If he wants to dish out the anxiety you need to be calm then it may nit be worth all the hastle to be offended. Heidi Sent from my iPhone

I think you have a great opportunity to show the nation what this condition is all about. I suggest you take your MOm because she is such a trigger. Also, ask the show to pay for separate rooms. ThomSent from my iPad

Upon reading your post again,it may not be such a good idea. This condition deserves a full show and not sideshow treatment.Sent from my iPad

I think you should refer your show contact (Producer or assistant of the Dr. Phil Show) to this forum.  Let them know that this is much bigger than that...they may want to do a whole show on it...and perhaps get the Dr. M on the show as well.  Refer them to the NY Times articles, and the Today show links.  But especially this forum.  Because they can get a handle on this much better after reading here a few days.

That may be a privacy issue referring to this group.

I know I would not want my 13 yr old being questioned, nor would I want his

identity revealed because he is a minor (and still in school - would not want

classmates to use this against him and make his life harder).

i didn't mean for them to question everyone in the group.  I meant to get a better understanding of the problem it might help to read multiple perspectives of misophonia as everyone here has different issues.  Perhaps others might want to be on the show.  I wouldn't want my child on either...but someone else may want to be a big advocate and be more than willing to get on that show.

If Dr. Phil has completely dismissed the problem and basically told people with this problem that it isn't real and instead we have another problem (anxiety), what good would it do to go through it all again?

Possibly the greatest deniers of this condition are also

sufferers. Reading this forum has revealed to me the many tactics I used to

Now that it is actually more " out there " and ppl are coming out of the woodwork...I think the Dr. phil show would view this from a totally diff. perspective.  I know our doctor friend (who originally blew me off as if this were some made up concoction of my 11 year old to gain attention of some sort) is now on board and actually reading up on this.  That is why I suggested if the producers were to read some of the posts in this forum...it would possibly open their eyes as to something more to be looked into than a few simple therapy lessons can resolve.
