Hi Simon,

I have been purchasing lye from Allied Chemical in Tulsa OK for several

years, but I do pick it up there. I normally purchase a 50 lb bag, but have

it repacked in 10 lb buckets for an additional fee. They line each bucket

with a poly bag and tie it off.

You may find that you have a chemical supplier in your area that will sell

lye to you. Check the yellow pages under chemical suppliers and make a few

calls. This is a common ingredient and normally sold in the industry as

caustic soda.

Hope this helps,

Pam Ingle

Hi Simon,

These are the people I get it from in Reno, this has a CA address.

The price went up for me from $34 for 50lbs to $51 per 50, but it is

still cheap. I do not know how far this is from you, but it gives you

an idea where else to look.

I have an odd request, and if this is totally inappropriate, please

excuse me. I have only been on this group for a few weeks, and have

mostly just lurked until now. But the conversation regarding looking

for lye intrigued me greatly because back in February I started a

yahoo group to help soapers locate lye. It's not a discussion group,

basically we're just using it as a database to help soapers who are

having difficulties finding it since Red Devil pulled theirs from the

shelves.

Here's the link if anyone is having difficulties of their own finding

it, and for anyone wanting to be sure I'm " legit " before sharing this

information.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/LiarsAnonymous/

The group is moderated, it's not listed in Yahoo's Directory, and

every member goes through an approval process that includes a

questionnaire to ensure they are soapers. I've done everything I can

to ensure this information gets to soapers only.

And on to my request. I was able to add several more locations to this

database thanks to the responses to Simon's original post. I'm hoping

there are others on the list that will be willing to share with me

(for this database) the locations they purchase their lye (or any

others that they know of).

If you'd prefer to send the information privately, that's fine. I'm

looking for company name, state and city, a website if they have one,

and at least some way of contacting them (address, phone number,

email, anything you happen to have). If they provide both lye and

potash, so much the better. Thank you for helping the soapers out

there who are struggling to continue in this craft because of the

difficulty we've recently had in finding lye.

Thank you,

Goodwin

Hi Simon,

Caustic soda AKA sodium hydroxide is typically used to make bar soap.

Potasium hydroxide is use to make liquid soaps. Both are commonly called

lye.

Sulfuric acid is sometimes used in water garden ponds or koi ponds to change

the pH. You might try checking at a pond suppliers. Aquatic Eco-Systems,

INC is a reputable online suppliers of many years.

Do you mind if I ask what it is you are you making? Is this a homeland

sequrity issue? <g>

My best source is my local janitorial supply house. I live in a small

community and they keep it on hand to clean grease traps for Mcs,

Sonic, etc. Hope this helps.
