A cleaning and check up won't cost thousands. Even if you do not get extensive work done (I need a crown and a root canal), the cleaning will help stop problems from getting worse, or the onset of new ones. If there is a dental college in your area, you might check there also. You can get deeply discounted services. Also, as I mentioned before, many dentists have payment plans. At least go a see a good dentist. There are nice ones out there...really. The younger ones have a very different approach and manner for the most part and really want you to be comfortable.
