Kirstin,

I had bulimia when I was young. Overcame it .My daughter who also has misophonia has had a very serious case of bulimia. I love food, cooking and eating with a passion, and cooking for company and friends, but hate noisy eaters. Go figure.

It may be related in some way. I avoid medication at all costs. I have enough problems. I guess it works for some ,but I chose a more natural route.

I have never posted on here, and I too have recently been introduced.. Here is my story in a nutshell...I am a 35 year old woman, I have been dealing with these issues as far back as I can remember.. I have been to numerous therapists, been on many antidepressants, and nothing really has been of much help. I also have an eating disorder, I have been binge eating for years.. I went from a childhood of being tortured by food, to not knowing where my next meal was coming from, to hoarding food as an adult, to then bingeing on it. I was told that this may be a manifestation of these eating issues. Currently with the help of Wellbutrin, I have not binged in about 5 years, but the mouth noises and the anxiety related to these noises has just gotten worse...Any thoughts? Anyone else with this same correlation? When my therapist mentioned it to me, it kind of made sense, but after reading these posts.. I think it may be unrelated

alltogether..Thanks, P.S. Kit Kat should be fined for their damn "gimme a break" commercials.. just sayin!

Hi , I had an eating disorder involving binging then dieting and overexercising back to binging, all through college, a time of extreem stress for me, The eating order went away upon graduation and has not returned. My misophonia started at 12 before the eating disorder and has never abated. Personally, I don't think there is a correlation as far as obsession with eating or food. If anything the correlation would be that these are both stress related conditions, in my opinion. To: Soundsensitivity Sent: Wednesday, September 14, 2011 10:13 PMSubject: Food issues... related?

hi

I've had a lot of food issues, bulemia and being generally worried about

food all the time. I always thought that this problem was food and anxiety

related also. It's interesting to see another explanation. This makes more

sense to me. I had a friend who snacked all the time. I stopped talking to

her because listening to her chew constantly made me crazy. I found myself

thinking I hate you, I hate you, I hate you most of the time I was with her.

I always thought it had to be related to my own problems with eating because

she is seriously overweight but this makes more sense to me. What other

people look like has never bothered me.

Given how much of the US is over weight, I think it is hard to get any feel for

correlation :).

I do binge occasionally, and hadn't thought of it being related, but you make me

wonder.

I'm also a picky eater. Certain textures and tastes set off anxiety beyond what

feels normal Fortunately that's a lot easier to live with than noise.

Bulimia can also be caused by malnutrition. I also suffered from this -- and

sometimes still get the urge. When this happens, I look at my recent diet and

mental state. I notice that when I eat more protein, stay away from simple

starches and sugars, and get more sunshine and exercise, that the urges diminish

or disappear. Find the food combination that works for your body type.

When our digestive tract gets damaged from one thing or another (antibiotics,

allergens, toxicities, etc.), it no longer has the ability to extract nutrition

from food. So you can eat and eat until you're stuffed, but still feel hungry,

so you eat more. Then you're so full, you have to expel. But then you're hungry

again!

But it's more...when we're malnourished, it can lead to depression and other

psychological disorders, as well a myriad of health problems.

I believe many (if not most) people who binge eat are really trying to

self-medicate. They're hungry not only because of malnutrition, but because

malnutrition can cause depression. But it backfires. Not only are they

malnourished and depressed to begin with, but when they expel food from their

stomach, they are causing a host of other health problems -- throwing digestive

acidity out of balance, damaging teeth and throat tissue, etc. And then there's

the cycle of guilt....Why do I do this to myself!

I think there is a direct connection between bulimia and and Gut and Psychology

Syndrome (GAPS), and may very well be related to the long-term stress responses

from Misophonia. In fact, there are some who suggest that neurological

conditions such as Autism, ADD, etc. may be initially caused by insufficient gut

flora when a child's nervous system is being formed. Without sufficient gut

flora, the nutrients needed for neural development were missing.

Hi Kat

Thanks for the information. That is really interesting to know. I'm glad

you've found a good way to handle this. For me, I have a much bigger problem

with vomiting than bingeing. I really don't binge. I feel very guilty about

eating but I don't really restrict calories and am about 10 lbs overweight.

My food problems are related to childhood abuse.

,

I guess I'm confused then about your post where said you had a problem with

bulimia. The definition of bulimia is a cycle of bingeing and purging.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulimia_nervosa

Either way, I hope you figure it out.

My daughter has misophonia and she has a very normal diet and always had. I don’t think it is caused by a mental association with food. I think diet plays a part. Eating glutin free helps with autism. Misophonis is

part of the autism spectrum. I am almost possitive genetics is the reason. You

may not know anyone in her family that has it, but it could be there and far

back. I have basque and souxe on my moms side. My aunt has dark skin, but no one

else does. There is also a small amount in my and my moms blood. Genetics is a

interesting thing. You never know what could show up even though it was in there

way back.

I really do not think misophonia is part of the autism spectrum. We will only know that when research is done. But I am about as far away from the spectrum as it gets.

If I'm correct, I think it goes like this. Only a small percentage of Misophonia

sufferers also suffer from autism-like symptoms; but it's not uncommon for those

with Autism to also have Misophonia.

I tested as borderline Aspergers using a popular online test.

There is no proof they are connected, but there's a good chance they have a

similar root cause -- namely something that affects the development of the

nervous system and how we perceive our senses.

Yeah. My parents suspect that I have autism. I learned to speak and read and

write like everyone else, but I know that that doesn't hapen to everyone with

autism.

Good point Ian,

I only meant to point out that people with autism may be more likely to have

Misophonia than the general population, but that having Misophonia does not mean

you're more likely to have autism. Yet, regardless of diagnosis, they may have a

similar root cause.

I really do not think misophonia is part of the autism spectrum.  We will only know that when research is done.  But I am about as far away from the spectrum as it gets.

I think diet plays a part. Eating glutin free helps with autism. Misophonis is part of the autism spectrum. I am almost possitive genetics is the reason. You may not know anyone in her family that has it, but it could be there and far back. I have basque and souxe on my moms side. My aunt has dark skin, but no one else does. There is also a small amount in my and my moms blood. Genetics is a interesting thing. You never know what could show up even though it was in there way back.

I mean that it often shows up in people with autism.

I agree, Heidi. If my daughter is in the autism spectrum, then I think it could be argued that everyone is. My daughter is a very typical teenage girl. The only difference is that she has misophonia. I have met many people with misophonia (you’d be amazed at how many are in a community) and they are all very average normal people. Does Ripa seem autistic? She looks pretty normal to me. I’m not sure how wide the autism spectrum goes, but I have worked with many different autistic children, and the people I have met with misophonia don’t at all seem autistic. I coined the term Meniere Spectrum Disorder, which is relevant to

audiosensitivity and probably misophonia, by analogy with Autism Spectrum

Disorder. Height is another example of a spectrum condition; most people vary

around the average height, with very tall or very short peole often having

pathological and treatable medical conditions. On well constructed autism

questionnaires now available there is a continuous range of scores, with those

with high scores corresponding to the clinical category Autism, those with very

low scores being possibly oversocial, and most people somewhere in between. If

there were a scale for MSD, high scorers would correspond to patients labelled

Meniere's Disease by doctors, and many people would have zero scores, at least

most of the time. However, many have intermediate scores. Even sex is not a

categorical condition, but a dimension or spectrum, yet are all happy talking

about men or women, that is unless we are on the Olympic Games Sexing Committee.

Yeah, it's rarely black and white when it comes to these different syndromes --

only levels of grey.
